Dies a allis b need lead additive in engine oil. Dealer told me use diesel oil in it for extrA lube ability due to age

Diesel oil is good, for gas or diesels! But i didn't know it was the lead that made it better, i thought it was the extreme pressure part of the diesel oil is what is beneficial.there is a term, that's it is called , i cant recall it right now,it's on the back of a diesel oil jug!

So folks in here have been saying 30 weight is good enough but dealer said diesel oil is recommended,, whats good for an 80 year old B??

I use 15-40 diesel oil in my old tractors. It is what a lot of people use in the old car/truck engines because of the zinc. Some newer oils for the newer diesels the zinc is reduced.

How often are you going to work it 6 plus hours a day 6 or seven days a week, like a farmer would back in its day? Even without the higher level of zinc in some diesel oils, I doubt you will run it enough to wear the cam and lifters out. Most any new detergent oil will be better than the oils available when your B was built. If you are only going to run it when the temperature is above 32F, 30 weight would be fine. If you are going to start it at lower temps you might want 10W30. Many of us run 15W40 diesel oil year-round. Take your pick on oil, you are not going to get everyone here to agree on and say use this one oil, at least I have never seen it happen yet. JMHO

Here you go , Rotella T1 SAE 30 at your friendly local Walmart

I don't think lead is what you need in your oil. Its zinc that you need. It helps lubricate the camshaft and tappets on flat tappet cams.

Small engine oil still has zinc in it because most small engines still use flat tappet cams.

Since I buy oil by the barrel and not going to stock a separate oil for just one or 2 gas engines they all get the 15-40 from the barrel. Only had one instance on a ford escort that the oil in cold weather it would push the filter off the base and leak with 15-40 in it. Had to go to a thinner oil for it. In summer it was fine.

I have read a reply email from an oil expert about this question. Their answer was on an under 2000 rpm engine making comparatively low HP, that all oils on the shelf have enough zinc in them to safely lube a flat tappet engine. Clean oil matters more that the perfect one.

I have 11 tractors between 1927 and 1959. Been using Mobil Delvac in them for years with no additives. In my opinion, adding zinc or lead is just a waste of money.

Bottom line is about any current engine oil is better than the oil available when your tractor was built. If you keep 10W30 around for other engines you have use it, it will be fine, and you don't end up with an oil collection of various types/weights of engine oil.

Do you have a manual for your B? If not try the link below to go to a copy of the AC service manual for it and related models.
