cut this spruce tree down yesterday . i have watched it grow for over 40 years in the ditch here. county was going to chip it up. i managed to get it for firewood, was 18 inch near bottom. i used to cut the grass around it before when it was like 4 inches. the limbs on it were like trees, being out in the open like that. got a few others for firewood also. got it bucked up and did some splitting. the splitter works good.

About 10 years ago a spruce came down by my mom's place. I sawed 2x10s out of the butt log. It was one of a couple thousand we planted about 4-6 inches tall when in 4H as youngsters

Good time of year to cut wood, you don't sweat so bad! Nice to have a hydraulic splitter for spruce, it's really hard to split, especially when it's that knotty. It would of made some knotty pine paneling, but too many knots for dimension lumber.

I would put the branches in my burn pit and piled brush on top of them. They make a great fire starter.

Had you cut the tree before Christmas, you could have sold them as a Christmas tree, some assembly required.

(quoted from post at 18:31:53 01/30/22) Could have made some lumber. The trouble is, unless you have a mill close, it's more work than it's worth.

Fence row trees have too many too big knots for lumber.

Those blocks look kinda short but that makes them easier to handle. Sorry to see such a beautiful tree go away.

Pasture spruce like that make poor lumber due to big lower limbs. Grown in the woods the lower limbs self prune from shading and limit the size of knots.

i purposely have them cut less than a foot long to fit in my small heater. and easier to split also with those big knots. next years wood.
