I agree. So much invested in what I presume is a single use structure. And not only is it a huge structure, the stationary mechanism installed had to have been a major expense also. I wonder if it would load out, as well as unload?

Makes my arthuritic hands throb just looking at that crib! Have you ever husked a load of corn? Thanks for posting! Leo

I wish I had oneof those. They were crib
on the sides and grainery in the middle
over the drive.

I wondered if that was why they built in the center. So at least it could store something more than ear corn. There's nothing like that around central NY. Any old grain elevator was just that, for grain only. Seems that ear corn storage was relegated to least important, often even temporary structures.

My favorite kind of cribs, I 'll bet it has a Meyers bucket elevator in it. Drive right through and unload in the middle. One stop shop to
grind feed ,ear corn on the side and oats or barley up above, couldn't be easier. That was state of the art. With a little imagination and a
lot of hard work you could make that into a awesome man cave or B&B, put in some windows, multi level, upper lounge area, I sure wish I had one.

that must have been a very big farm in its day to have a crib like that!
do you know any of the background on the farm were its at?

Dont get me wrong it is very nice but could use some refurb on the front doors//frame and wood on the very top. Thanks for the post. Nice. Wingnut

There are several big cribs in NW Iowa. I like to drive cross country to find old cribs and farmsteads. Ill. has many also , I'm better at taking my time now that I am retired and usually not on such a tight schedule and my wife has an appreciation for old stuff too.

I was at a farm estate auction in Montgomery County PA that had to have been at least 20 years ago now, that had a similar crib. It was the only one like it I have ever seen. There was a dairy barn and two silos built with the same type of block. It certainly had been a prosperous farm and was still in pretty good shape when the sale happened. The auctioneer had the crib listed as available for bidding and subsequent removal, but not surprisingly, there were no bids. Sadly, the land was sold for development and all the buildings were eventually demolished.
