Hey guys, going to replace the injectors on my 4020 diesel side
controls synchro. What do I need to do this? Besides the injectors, is
there other parts I need? Like gaskets? Can someone walk me
through the steps

Remove the fuel lines form the injectors and the injection pump . Pull the return fuel line from top of the injectors . Then remove the injector hold down clamp next use a bar and pry the injectors from the cylinder head .

The bottoms of the injectors will be covered, baked on carbon. If you can, use the carbon reaming tool made for this so you won't damage the small sealing ring ( carbon dam ) on the new injector. JDE 39, I believe is the OTC Tool number.

Reaming tool.

Use a penetrating oil and twist them back and forth some before trying to pry them out. When replacing, coat with never-seize. Also change all plastic leak-off tees and boots with new ones. When disturbed they will not last. Hope this helps......Ron

Make friends with a John Deere service department tech! If you don't get an injector seated, you will be doing the job again.
Maybe a brass barrel brush from a gun cleaning kit would work, be better than nothing.

The lower carbon dam seal only blows when the top compression seal does not hold compression. The top head seal area and hold down clamps must be in good condition for the top compression seal to hold. I scrap lots of otherwise good pencil injectors because fellows are not careful with the pry bar, and score up the upper seal area just below the fuel inlet. The top seal won't hold compression if injector is damaged there also.
