Dr Sportster, In Philip D's post yesterday about the PEI potatoes you mentioned that you know why the water is warm at PEI. Can you further elucidate? Not sure if this is a reference to the gulf stream or something else.

The water in Maine is freezing but the gulf stream hits Canada about the location of PEI Therefore the PEI water is warn as Miami.

That's interesting. How wide is the gulf stream? I always figured it warmed Maine in a similar manner.

It does, all the way up the east coast of North America.
Ocean water around PEI is below freezing on average five months out of the year.
Maybe helps keep ice away but not by much.

Can we take another look at this? just to explain things a bit precise? The gulf stream does come past the northeast states, and goes to the east of Nova Scotia, across Sable Island and way east past Newfoundland to strike Ireland/English coastlines.
PEI is located in the Gulf of St-Lawrence, picture it being in the bottom of a land formed letter U, with New Brunswick/Nova Scotia surrounding it, no gulf stream can get to it. It being located in the Gulf of St-Lawrence, and the gulf of St -Lawrence does freeze over starting in Dec to April, In the warmer months, the gulf of St.L.., does warm up due to the water being somewhat non-moving/sun/air temp/shallower water affect, easily 5 degrees difference from PEI to here on the Atlantic coast during the non frozen times and the opposite during the winter months.
For instance at this time of writing Phillip D is at 24F and i am at 30f.
Hope all is good now and we keep our sticks on the ice.
