How rare is a John Deere 40U with mid mount sickle

Hey there. Just picked up a 40U with a Mid Mount Sickle bar mower and it seems to be in all original condition painted highway orange. I saw it and thought it would be
nice to fix up and use to use around the tractor club farm. Depending on the rarity i may just get it in mechanically sound condition and show it off since it truly is an
original survivor.

Pure speculation on my part, but it may be a John Deere 10 Side-Mounted Mower.

Take a look at the illustration below.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]MAIN FRAME HANGER[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note that this mower can be mounted to a 40U.

Hope this helps.

We'd love to know more. You mention getting it mechanically sound. What does it need? Is it running? Can you do pictures. Oh, and congratulations!

The 40U is somewhat scarce. IIRC something like 5 or 6 thousand made ? Only 3 other 40 models with less production.
40H is least amount made. then 40V, then the 40W with only 1800 to 2000 made. For some odd reason rare does not equal what they sell for. I have seen 40U sell better than 40W models.

Ga D.O.T. had about a of dozen of them based here with that mower setup for cutting hiway roadside. Finally phased them out and the city got one of them and they used it several more years till it was completerly worn out. I tried several times to buy it after they parked it up but they said no, it had to go to the State Surplus center auction in another town below here so I just gave it up.

Put myself thru college (1955-60) with a 40U and a Detroit Harvester mower. IIRC Deere called it a model 47. Mowed roadsides for the county. Loved that tractor ...... however, 1st gear was too slow, and 2nd was a little fast - so operated most of the time in 2nd at about half throttle. Rolled it once - you never forget the sound of a tractor chasing you down a roadbank. In my old age I have a 40U, a 320U, a 40S, and a 40W with a model 50 side mower.

I've got two MT's, one single front wheel, other pair of front wheels.
I've got a 5-foot mid-mount mower I'd like to mount on one of them.
I'm wondering if I could mount a 7-ft cutter bar on it.
It is literally a basket case. Just a pile of pieces that I need to sort out
and put together. I hope all the pieces are there!!!!
Somewhere I've got the book. Just need to find it and go to work.

That mower was manufactured by Detroit Harvester, and labeled as a #47 by Deere. Other than frame mounting parts and cutter bar parts, go to Ford for parts. There were 10 of those sold to go on Fords for every one Deere sold.

Interesting. Hey learned something new today so now i can take a nap. Hope to get into it this weekend but will see, Probably just gonna leave it in its work clothes with a New Seat

I was wondering about the lineup of old JDs till I read your caption on the last picture. Surely an antique JD lover would have thought he died and went to heaven coming upon that auction lineup.

On a mid-mount mower vs a tag along of drag or 3 pt., no doubt they do a whole lot better job and are easier on the operator than the latter.

In my 78 years here in Northwest Ohio I have never seen or heard of a 40U tractor. 40T or 40S and the S was a useless tractor. Now a 420 yes heard of all different models but never saw anything but tricle or row crop utility.

Thanks for the description and pictures. Could I have the serial number? I'm SLOWLY making a list of the early industrial Deeres and I'd like to throw yours on the list if possible. I see the tag in one of the pictures but I can't make it out

I don't have any numbers or even guesses of the amount made, it's not rare, but it's not common either. Finding it in the condition you found is hard to do though!
