75 Ford 3600

I have a few of questions that hopefully can be answered here. I have a 75 ford 3600 diesel that I have been rebuilding. Questions are
1. How does the hour meter work? I find one answer that says it is connected to the alternator, and another that says the tach cable runs it.
2.When unplugging the tach cable from the tach assembly and removing the instrument cluster from the hood the cable will turn. As soon as I reinstall the cluster it will not. I've rerouted the cable several times, but nothing helps. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

The corners are worn off the cable core either at the generator end or the tach end. Get a new cable, or sometimes you can heat the tip of the cable with a torch and hammer it square again. You dont say how long it has been inoperative, so it is possible the sockets that the core fits into could be worn out as well

A 3000's tach is driven off the generator. A 3600 has an alternator and the tach is driven off a gear below the oil filter.
A '75 should be a 3000... or, a '76 model year 3600 built in the last couple months of '75. It would be interesting to see your tractor's unit number.

So I replaced the short cable (it was broken) and also got a new tachometer cable. Still nothing working. I unscrewed the tach cable to see if the short cable was turning and it wasn't. Put my finger on it and didn't feel any movement. Do you know if there's only one hole to put the short cable in? Really difficult to see where it's going.
