Propane Heater

I'm Stumped.
I have a Mr Heater propane heater.
I have the Mr Heater approved hose and filter to run it off a 20lb tank rather than the small green tanks.

I have run several 20 lb tanks through this heater with no problem.
Tank ran out so I installed a new sealed exchange tank.
Pilot light comes on but when you try to turn it on the pilot light goes off and it shuts down.
I let the pilot light run for 10 minutes but it did the same thing.

Finally got fed up with it so I installed a differant sealed exchange tank.
This tank worked as it should.

I have not tried to install the first tank again just to see if it will work.
I can not for the life of me figure out why one tank will work and the other would not.

I guess my next step is to call the place that fills the tanks as the store where I got in is just a reseller.

I had one tank like that if you drew enough off too fast the safety would slam closed. Try barely cracking the tank valve to get it lit(one half turn maybe)and the slowly open to get full stream, when going to a higher setting on the heater.

It's the OPD(overflow protection device). They 'stick',not allowing the propane to flow.I hate em.I can just barely use a small hand held weed burner with one.Just another bright idea by some beaurocrat to protect us from ourselves.

The "safety" valve the horrid government mandated. If you shut the valve off and let the tank sit for 10 or so minutes it is "supposed" to reopen. YMMV

Try that tank again, but when you turn the tank valve on, turn it on ever so slowly. I have proven this works to so many people on there gas grills and gas smokers.Let us know if it works.

ShAD THAT PROBLEM ONE TIME SO i CHECKED WITH THE PROPANE CO ANS THEY SAID MAKE SURE YOU HEATER IS HIGHERTHAN THE TANK. IT WORKED. SORRY CAPS LOCKED IN. BILL

Had the same problem as above. Had to just barely crack open the valve and wait for it to flow. After that you could fully open the tank valve.

Lots of good advice here, maybe disconnect it to bleed off the pressure, and reconnect and turn on slowly. I have had this problem a couple of times in the 2o years we have been using the new style tanks. I have always been able to quickly correct the problem. 4 people just got badly burned in a fish house on a lake in MN, they had 3 tanks inside the house, something went wrong, propane is dangerous!

I have also had those new style tanks that a seat inside the opening came loose. I forget what issue that caused though .

I had to change the thermocouple on my 18000 BTU Mr heater.

I can't use mine because it gives me a headache within minutes if I use it inside my garage. I have no reason to try to use it in my uninsulated pole barns.

If I lose power for a long time in the winter, I may put it in the basement to keep the pipes from freezing. I wouldn't live in the house during that time.

"OPD" = OVERFILL Protective device, a float-operated valve to prevent the tank from being overfilled.

The "Excess Flow Valve" is an entirely different mechanism.

Hit the tank fairly hard with a 2X4 or such to unstick that opd valve. I have to do that for my BBQ grill sometimes.

Thanks guys.
No matter what the valve is called I got the gist of what you were trying to tell me.
I tried the tank again; this time only cracking the valve and heat on low.
It ran for about 20 or 30 seconds and shut down.
Putting the heater on hi shuts down the tank immediately.

I called the place that fills and supplies the tanks.
Tech said take it back to the store for a full exchange and tell them to mark the tank defective.
If the store manager has a problem with this have them call me and I will get it straight.

Thanks again for your help.

F problem is excess flow valve , that is easily fixed with a punch & press or punch and hammer.

The insurance companies, except in bad times like now, usually have plenty of money. They are able to spend plenty on lobbyists to help get legislation passed. Even if no one likes the people who get injured or killed the insurance still has to pay, so they are constantly trying to prevent people from hurting themselves regardless of ow little we like it.

o sir!....they are trying to reduce payouts, but if it keeps people safer, that is a good side benefit.

JMOR I think you read my post a little too fast. " injured or killed the insurance still has to pay, so they are constantly trying to prevent people from hurting themselves regardless of how little we like it."

Isn't that one in the same? They could always reduce payouts by straight up denying claims, but it wouldn't be long before people figured that out and quit buying insurance. Before that would be the massive class action suit against the company for fraud.
