OT Computer question

Short story long...I had to get a new computer this year. I did not buy a monitor because the old one is really nice and big and I didn't want to spend the $$$. Much to my surprise, the new computer hooks up to a monitor using what they call a display port out connector. My monitor has the thing in the picture below. Tomorrow I have to have an intelligent conversation about this with people. Anyone tell me what the connector in the picture is called? Are there adapters?

Does your monitor have an HDMI port? If so, you can get a [b:647301b76a]Display Port to HDMI cable[/b:647301b76a]. That's what I use, but my 'monitor' is actually a 32" TV. Being a TV, it has speakers, where my past PC monitors had separate speakers requiring a separate cable for the sound; either phono plug or 3.5mm plug.

In any case, if your monitor has this port:

then you can use this cable from your PC to your monitor:

Not to be a kill joy but there is a possibility that your computer may not be compatible with the old monitor. All I know is that in early 2021 I brought my work computer home to do some work and I was going to use an older monitor I already has at home for a 2nd screen and my work computer would not recognize it. I say that monitor was fairly old, probably from the 90s it was a flat screen and used the kind of connector you are showing.

The VGA standard is analog and pretty much obsolete. I'm a bit surprised you can get an adapter as cheap as the one Royse pointed out, but understand that an adapter has to take the digital video signal and convert it to an analog signal your monitor can handle. If your monitor is VGA-only, it's quite old and overdue for replacement. New monitors are quite cheap these days, and I'd really recommend replacing your old monitor. But first check to see if your monitor has some sort of digital interface. It might be DVI or HDMI; both of these are digital standards that are easily adapted to DisplayPort. Note that both DVI and HDMI have multiple connector standards, so make sure the adapter you get is the right one for your monitor.

Appreciate all the help! Here I am on the new computer which is Windows 11 and slower than the old Win7 machine with all its junk on it. I was lucky, I ordered the adapter from Amazon last night and it was on my porch 7 AM this morning. The monitor works fine with the new computer so far. Going to have to resize before I go blind trying to read the small print.

Glad to hear it worked Dave. There's also a way to set the Windows 11 taskbar/start menu back to where it was on Windows 7/10.
It was either a check box or an on/off slider switch, I don't remember right off, but it was easy.

The type of connector is called a dB15. The "D" stands for the shape of the shell. They are analog in most cases. The 15 stands for the number of pins.
