Filings in hyd oil 8200/8400 john deeres

So I change hydraulic filters on all tractors every year. 3 years ago filings showed up in one tractor and this year filings showed up in the other. Sent one tractor to JD shop and they pulled PTO housing out and inspected as much as they could look at. Found nothing wrong and said don't worry about it. Asked a different JD dealership about it and they said don't worry about it. They are small flecks the size of a pin head and silver and gold in color. Can anyone tell me what this could be ? It bothers me even though JD said not to worry. I just can't figure this is normal.

You can have a little wear on gears and brake material which will produce some flakes those tractors are almost 30 years old now the first ones .

The reason things wear out is that they get used. Metal flakes, as you found, are expected and normal. The filter is intended to be stopping their travel to the down stream components! It is very easy to prevent the shiny flakes. Don't yse the tractor. But then beware of the brown rusty flakes. Jim

If you want a third opinion you could get a couple oil sample bottles from your nearest Cat dealer, and they can tell you exactly what metals or debris is in the oil. You will need to supply information like hours on oil, and quantity of make-up oil , and the tractor information. Then in the mail they will send you the list of metals and other junk that was found in the oil, and how much of each. Then they have a summary at the end, expressing where the pieces might be coming from. There are acceptable levels of metal in the oil, but if something seems excessive, they will recommend that you change the oil and re-test. These guys can tell way more than someone looking in the hole.
