jd 2510 VOLTAGE/AMP QUESTION

Hello, my 67' 2510 takes 2 of the BCI 3ET batteries. The batteries are and have been hooked up for the last 20 years that i have owned by having both positive leads connected seperately from each batteries to the same starter terminal and the ground leadss for each battery are from the battery to the frame.

This does not seem to be in line with either of the series or parrelell connection diagrahms that I have seen. My question is: If i have two 12 volt 500 CA batteries connected in this manner does it give me a total of 1000 CA at the starter??

Thanks for any enlightenment!

You have, as far as I'm concerned, the best hook up possible. The only improvement might be to run ground cables to near the
starter. Bigger starters are apt to have a ground terminal. The way yours is wired eliminates any special, double ended battery
cables. You can easily separate the halves of the system when trouble shooting. Possibly your tractor, when new, had two 3EH, 6V
batteries wired in series?

To your question:

My QUESTION If i have two 12 volt 500 CA batteries connected in this manner does it give me a total of 1000 CA at the starter??

ANSWER YES Cold Cranking Amps adds if in parallel as EACH can in theory or rating supply 500 amps, and 500 + 500 = 1000 amps

NOTE 1 CONNECTION EXAMPLE if each battery has its own POS and NEG cables that lead to starter and ground, IE NOT ladder connected:

For each battery to better achieve equal charging and load supplying amps, its best if the cables (say from each battery to Ground and
each battery to the Starter, if that's the chosen connection) are the SAME length.

NOTE 2 Ladder style parallel connection.

For each battery to better achieve equal charging and load supplying amps, for parallel ladder connection of two batteries A & B, its good
practice if for example the POS of one battery A connects to the starter,,,,,,, and the NEG of the other battery B connects to ground.

Hope this helps

PS Sure it still works even if the Smartgauge methods aren't adhered to exactly !!!!!!!!!!!! WELL DUH

Connection Batteries in parallel

Thanks for the responses! So if I understand my connection is considered a ladder style parallel connection correct!

3ET batteries around here are hard to find and come in a lot of different amp ratings. I found CarQuest (Interstate I think) for 125.00/each with 460 CA (each) which should give me 920 CA total, which should be plenty for this 4 cylinder, 8 valve diesel. At least I believe so.

Only other batteries I could find available local are the JD batteries at 153.00 each but have 750 CA for a total of 1,500 CA total. Would this be overkill for this tractor? Or should I spring extra for the JD batteries. I am in Texas, so not as cold as in the north for winter activities.

My 2520 was built as a gas tractor. I bought it used, and put a diesel in it. I added a battery. Both ground cables run to the
transmission cover. I ran the positive from one battery to the other. It never worked well. In warm weather, when being used
frequently, it was OK. Otherwise, I was always boosting it. Last spring, when I rewired it, I ran new positive cables from each
battery to the starter, mimicking some of my newer, bigger tractors. What a difference!

At a seminar at the local diesel/electric shop they said the down side to a higher CCA battery was more, thinner plates, which are
more prone to vibration damage. Your 460 batteries ought to be fine. I think that's what I have.

Do you use the 3ET batteries because that's the only thing that will fit?

Back 20 + years ago I was maintaining several fork lifts with those batteries, had horrible luck with them!

Not just me, everybody hated them, the suppliers had problems getting defective pallets of them.

Things may have changed since then, but if there is room for a more popular battery size, might consider it. Should be better price too.

I have no specs or data but UNLESS its sub zero 920 CCA should start her just fine. Still 1500 CCA for not that much more money would likely
crank her a bit faster for quicker starting YOUR MONEY YOUR CHOICE either will work okay

I have an IH584 diesel and it has a Walmart $50 650CCA battery in it and it fires up when I need it. I fired it up today after it has sat for over a month with no problem. Was in the upper 50s here today

Yes that (3ET) is what fits in the stock battery boxes. I have entertained the thought of removing the existing boxes and fabricating a std. box for the current 12 volt batteries. These long suitcase batteries only seem to last 2 years at the most. I do not use this tractor very much so i should probalby install a battery tender....
