I have to go from here (Dover Tn.) to West Plains MO. Have no problem getting to Poplar Bluff but googel maps has me going to Doniphan then 142 and 63 , looking on the map what is wrong with 160 from Doniphan to West Plains. What am I missing. Ford pickup no 18 wheeler if that makes a difference. Somebody that is familiar with that area help me out.

My wife grew up in West Plains and has been on it lots more than me...160 from Doniphan to West Plains is hilly and curvy but it is scenic in places....

Throw away Google and get a good old fashioned paper map.Or Road Atlas. Our State Farm Insurance agent gives em away for free.

With out pulling out my old map books I can not help much but 60 or 160 should be good. As others have said spend a few bucks and buy a map or 3.

Used to travel regularly between Joplin-Cape Girardeau, always went 160 from West Plains to Poplar Bluff. Like already said, it was hilly, curvy and scenic. Not many places to pass, and few towns.
Never had an issue with it, but it's been several years since I've made that trip.

jm,
One time google maps said to go a different way.
The next day a different way. Guessing there may have been a wreck or delay.

Have you tried using Wave instead of google maps?

Are you shipping some wood to Missouri?

When I run your route through google maps, it shows the US 160 route being a mere 1 minute slower than the 140/163 route. So they're the same. Google will always show you the route it thinks is fastest, even if it's only a couple of minutes faster.

I've also noticed that google maps and most other map apps and GPS devices give a marked preference to interstate highways. For instance, when routing from our home north of Detroit to points south, it will often prefer I-75 over US-23, even though 23 is much more direct and avoids going through the city.

If you are going to run 160 loaded with anything you will earn that trip. 160 doesn't have much for a shoulder if you need to stop for a flat or beak down. With lots of blind curves. If you're going to cross at Caruthersville (I-155) why not take US-412 west to US-63 then run up from there on US-63. There is a scale at Cabool that can be difficult sometimes when they are open. there used to be a truckstop right west of that scale. Was able to see the scale from there. Like you used to be able to do at Palmyra MO on Us-36 Truck stop was across the road from the scale there.

Google will always show you the route it thinks is fastest.

Sometimes google will take you the most scenic route.
One time it took us on the trail of tears.
Another time a route to avoid an accident.
Usually google will give us the fastest, then a few slower options.

If only google would give me an option to avoid Atlanta, Nashville and Birmingham.

George yes I use wave going west across Arkansas ever time I go to Texas, seems they are always working on I 40 and it helps avoid the tie ups. No I am not shipping lumber going over to pick up a KUBOTA engine from a fellow.

Most years 35 thousand + I trade ever two years and always around 65 to 70 thousand. I now have gone to a two truck set up[ using a f250 diesel for the road trips requiring a trailer so the primary or f150 gas may not see so many. Looks like now I put 12 thousand on the 250 diesel and 21 thousand on the f 150 eco boost last calendar year . nnalert probably held that down some.

DR At 78 I keep a current atlas in ever trip but I have learned these new in dash gps can be very accurate. I can punch in a route and it will show a 4 hr trip and my arrival time , most times it will be within 3 or 4 minutes. Like this I always check the map against the gps route and that is what prompted my question map looked like 160 was shorter but appears the 142/63 may be the best choice. Hope you are getting ready to get in that new house.

I can set mine to avoid major highways and interstates. I found out the hard way going elk hunting in KY! Seen some scary places, heard a lot of banjos!

I would not go anywhere near Doniphan unless you are in an unloaded pickup and want to take the scenic route.

If you are going to cross on 155 take the route caterpillar guy suggest 412 to 63.
If you going to cross in Cario run 60 all the way to 63 and go down to West Plains.
Personally I would take 60 threw Poplar Bluff all the way to Willow Springs and south on 63 to West Plains route.
We only talking a few minutes and much better roads.

Thanks John about as broad as it is lone from The bridge a Caruthersville or the bridge at Cairo looks like now I may take the southern route . I do the Sikeston trip pretty often and no ever crook and turn but maybe better going to Caruthersville and across 412 .

Google recently changed the logic on their GPS trip planning to take you on what they consider to be the greenest route. Generally that is a combination of the shortest/quickest route, but not always. I've found that having a paper map to compare can save a considerable amount on driving time/distance.

On the other hand, Google usually knows about trip delays and displays them in red on your route.

Geee , what is wrong with the old fashioned ATLAS . I have one of them and it does not need a power cord or batterys to use it . In my 60 years of driving big and small it has taken me many place along with the SCALES and low underpasses book . While hauling the big ugly stuff The states usually gave you routings . BUT sometimes the states would screw up big time . Pa sent me to a 10 ton road that to start off with got me hug up on a hill and lets not for get that oh a ten ton road with like six ten ton bridges and i am only 168000 Lbs , The W. Va sent me to a 14 foot under pass while i am 14 foot 5 inches tall , N.C sent me to a 12 foot wide lane restriction on a bridge when i was eleven foot eleven and three quarters wide And every one of them routes were done on the COMPUTER. Ohio sends me on a grand tour of the northern half of the state to just cross 2/3rds of the state that took a day and a half to do when had they let me run it the way we asked i could have been across the state in 3 and 1/2 hours BUT NO you are going to do it this way and the vary next load that was Bigger heavier and just as wide they ran me the way i wanted to go the first time . The first time i was going out to see and old friend in Mo. i sat down and played the Goggel thing and there way of getting there and just like the Ohio load it was going to be a sight seeing trip of 796. what ever miles and almost 16 hours Open atlas look at point A look at Point B draw line read routes write down route numbers , get in truck and head west .627.4 miles later and a little over 11 hours i am in her drive. Only screw up was going thru Peoria , found better route coming home cut 7 miles off and .hour and a half off the drive.

My mapping shows souther route thru Dyersburg, 412 to 63 to West Plains to be 291 miles taking 5 hrs, 26 minutes
Going thru Murry, Mayfield, Cairo and 60 to to 63 and West plains to be 284 miles taking 4 hrs,51 minutes
Taking 160 out of Popular Bluff is 10 miles shorter but takes 6 minutes longer.
This is mapped travel time, on good roads I normally travel at 5 mph over were on curvy secondary roads you may not be able to maintain posted limits, something to factor in.

That is just about what mine showed shorter or quicker to go North Cario , probably go one way
come back the other might find something to buy..

ONE unmarked police car and you are right I do not even want to stop there, used to eat there on the right going in from the south but no more, that place looks like a ghost town.

George I try to trade my primary truck Ford F 150 ever two years and it will usually have around 60 thousand ,then I have a 250 diesel for pulling a trailer that gets 8 to 10 thousand a year so 35/40 thousand a year. This last year is off some because of the //// but yes I go a lot.

Google maps is pretty spot on, it considers all aspects of travel, real time traffic, construction or other delays. It even alerts about active wrecks and speed traps, of course if you use it properly and utilize all aspects of navigation. You can even pick your own route or detour off course and it will carry on with it.

I always get alternate route options from google maps, the alternatives might include or omit toll roads, shortest route, quickest route, state highways, or interstates. They usually list several different options, click the one you want to use.

I just mapped this and google gives me three route options (2 go through Doniphan), all of them are within 27 minutes apart. You can pretty much take your pick which way you want to go if 27 minutes doesn't bother you.

There are other options you can click and drag the blue line to change or modify the course, it might be the way you want to go but it'll also be a way that takes more time to get there. You can use google like a paper map or Atlas, and click and drag your own route then it will still navigate you there.

(quoted from post at 18:07:27 01/10/22) I-70 run from St. Louis to KC and is close to 100 miles north of west plains if not more

Considerably more, and I-70 is [i:02186181b3]wretched[/i:02186181b3] road to boot.

60 to 63 is the route he needs.
