LED pole barn light

When I can't buy what I want, I make it.
I'm not afraid of climbing a ladder,
cvphoto113200.jpg

I'm afraid of gravity. Falling causes pain.
All LED outside lights I could find aren't repairable.
I would have to remove the entire LED light fixture.
Cut the power, remove the wires, put up a
new light, connect the power wires, all while standing on a ladder.
NO THANKS!

I couldn't find a repairable LED outside light, so
I took my old dusk to dawn light, removed the transformer, light
socket base, used the dusk to dawn sensor, installed
a light socket base for regular lights. Bought a cob
light and that's been my pole barn light for years.

Last night my LED light turned into a camera.
About once a second there was a bright strobe flash.

So, I climbed the ladder and installed a regular light bulb.
Easy to diagnose, I need a new cob light.

Anyone want to save money? You can have my strobe light
It will use less electricity because
the light is on about 1/50th of a second.

Good thing Menards has a 15% off bag sale this week. A guy on a fixed income has to take advantage of saving a few pennies.

BTW, Making my LED light was many times cheaper than buying a new LED you can't fix. I can buy about 5 replacement bulbs for the price of a non-pairable LED.

That light is made by the same company.
Looks like the upgraded version of
What they called a cob light back
when I made my light. About the same
price too. I'll see if my Menards has one.
Thanks.

I just threw a bulb exactly like that one away about 2 weeks ago, same story it flashed. Sometimes it would work ok then the next time it would flash. After a couple of ladder trips and trying it in different fixtures I pitched it. I have another fixture with same bulb, no problem thus far. I too like the concept of modifying fixtures to accomodate LED lamps, but at the same time some of these LED lamps are not made to be enclosed, so you kind of have too watch that.

yeah,
i'm not a fan of these throw a way lights.

I'd rather have a bulb to replace.

I've had little to NO luck with non brand name LED or compact florescent light bulbs allmost 100% fail in short order. name brand is more $ but if you have to replace 1/2 or 1/3 of them less offten it actually costs less.

It's been my experience that falling from a ladder does NOT cause pain... the sudden stop after the the fall is what causes the pain. :) Been there, 2 broken elbows, one partial replacement...

I've had many LED lights turn into strobe lights. Some of them almost immediately, others after only one or two days.

My dusk to dawn light is currently non-functioning. Needs to be replaced. The replacement WILL NOT be an LED light.

Here is a 1000 watt equivalent corn cob sandwiched into an old stadium light. This light has been on my shop forever but the old mogul based bulb just didn't put out much light compared to the LED yard light I have on a pole not far away. I have adaptors to adapt a small based bulb to mogul but the mogul base was recessed too far up into the fixture to get the corn cob to work. I took the light apart and replaced the mogul base with a regular small base and this is what it turned out to be. It is too bright to look at when it is on at night. It is many times brighter than a 1000 watt mogul based incandescent that would be the size of a volleyball and would make the light meter spin at a dizzying speed. This light is controlled by a switch inside the shop, no photo eye. I still have my fingers crossed on the pole mounted LED yard lights I have on the farm but so far they have held up very well.

I've better luck with LED's. Uses less electricity and last
longer than 150w Fluorescent that LED replaced.

Many times easier to replace a single bulb than replace the
entire fixture.

Cheaper and easier in the long run for me.

I'm cheap and lazy too.

Well John I dont think you would like to come to iowa right now with our temps but you need to be here to personally compare the Cob light with the LED pole light 100 feet away. The LED pole light is the biggest i could get without getting into a commercial street light three years ago. I dont remember the size. I do have more confidence on the longevity of the pole light though.

John,
You are welcome to use what you want.
I'm saving money on ER visits.
Be a different story if I paid someone to replace light each time it dies..I'm CHEAP

I like to fix some things, outside lights are one of them.

Not a fan of LED here. IMO, LED automotive head lights should be outlawed. Even aside from that, I hate em.

Sounds like a pretty good solution to me. I don't care for ladder work either.

I'll never fit in to our current throw away society. I have old stuff that is worth fixing. New stuff is not. Only buy new stuff when there is no other option.

Do the LED cob lights last as long as they are advertised to?

Don't remember when I converted to LED, been a while ago.
Planning on buying 2 LED's at menards, 15% off so I'll buy 2 for $34. Use a sharpie and write the date I install one.
I think the cob lights are winners.

My pole barn is 32'X40 and there are 2 rows of 3 light sockets up above. I bought LED lights that each have 3 wings that fold down. They screw right up into the light bulb sockets and it's like daylight in there when I turn them all on.

I just brought a new yard light I want to put up on my tv antenna tower. Now I'm trying to find a volunteer to climb up there and bolt it on. I will probably end up having to do it but may end up only going half way up with it.

I have three of those in various places in my shop and garage.
Yes, they do provide a lot of light!!!
Need to put up some more of them.

The older I get I think more about falling.
Getting off my Farmall I stepped on the belly mower.
Stepping off the deck, tripped and landed on the pole barn floor and in the process twisted my ankle. I didn't break anything.

My ankle sometimes talks to me. Other times it shouts. Reminds me of falling less than a foot.

No way would I climb a TV antenna.

I would call my tree guy that has a boom truck. He says he's installed a few lights on TV poles cheaper than a trip to the ER.

also got those lights in my 30x40 pole barn and love them. no dark corners now. Warden liked them so much she bought some and put them in our basement.
