John Deere 730

Should be no issues.Just swap the
battery cables and the amp gage
wires. Also swap the two wires on the
coil.

(quoted from post at 11:40:56 12/31/21) thats a 6 volt system?

JD 730 gasoline powered tractor came from factory with two 6 volt batteries attached in series for 12 volts. Changing to negative ground is easy just follow Deltared's instructions

Polarizing the generator is needed. If the voltage regulator is intended for positive ground, it might not last as long as one that is. Jim

Old fuel gauge and sending unit; isn't it for positive ground system?? It will not work with
negative ground??

Was the fuel gauge an option or standard equipment? If present, it might need lead changes also, but I'm not totally sure on that.

Why would you want to ? It is already 12 v so no gains to be had. The fuel gauge
will not like it and quit working unless it doesn't work now.

i am wondering the same thing, why? so many of these old tractors out there with positive ground with 12 volts. there waas a reason for the positive ground. it had to do with cylinder cavitation.

It has positive ground because it has a generator. If you change to an alternator, you have to change it to negative ground.

" there waas a reason for the positive ground. it had to do with cylinder cavitation"

All I can say is WOW!

"It has positive ground because it has a generator."

???? there were MANY tractors and cars with generators that were (-) ground.

"If you change to an alternator, you have to change it to negative ground."

Also complete "horse pucky", alternators are readily available in either ground polarity, it's a matter of personal choice.

i was taught that by a caterpillar instructor years ago. he explained the difference in neg. and pos. ground on an engine and the effect it
had on the tiny bubbles forming on the cyl's from vibrations on the power stroke. plus it is very important to keep the system pressurized
with a good cap. and yes there was something about the electrons and corrosion and all that physic's stuff. he taught us all in that class
and yes i do remember him saying about the positive ground and cavitation. and that was in 1996 and my ears hear this. so what does your WOW mean , im full of it or u didnt know.?

It was a theory back in the day but I only heard it being positive ground to reduce corrosion on the body and frame of a vehicle. I read some where a few years ago that some highway departments still run positive ground systems on their trucks for that reason. I believe it has been pretty difficult to prove or disprove it due to so many different conditions.

And often they were replaced by a 12 volt battery that was no where near the amperage that the 2 6 volts had. I never found much
difference between a positive ground and negative ground system. If it's having problems test and observe I doubt that changing the
polarity is going to effect much. The only reason I would change is if I was changing out the generator and the one going in was
designed for a negative ground system or needed to run something that was negative ground only. Your tractor is about 60 years old
check the cables and connections, make sure they're the right size and verify what ever battery(s) you have are pretty close to
what the factory specified when they built it.

yes agree, but when a person is sitting in a class room listening to these theory's and expect the instructor knows what he is talking about, and yes corrosion was talked about also.
