MF50 right wheel locks up in reverse

I have a 1960's mf50 4cyl gas. Sometimes when I'm snow blowing in reverse, my left wheel locks up. Forward is OK. Go back and forth and the wheel will free itself. I've disconnected the left brake rod and have had the wheel off and all looks OK. Is there something going on inside the diff? Don't notice this in the summer but then again don't do much operating in reverse.

Is the brake hanging up whether it is
dis-connected or not??
If it were differencial, I would think
the problem would not come and go.
Just stay locked up. Either that, or
you would know you had a problem
otherwise, other than just one wheel
randomly locking up.
Could have a bad axel bearing I guess.
But likewise, I think you'd be
noticing something else as well.
Noise, perhaps doing it going forward,
loose/floppy wheel.

Had a similar situation with a MF 35.....Cap Screws had sheared off on Crown Gear..
Pulled left Axel housing and delt with problem. :)

I was thinking maybe the tran/diff fluid was too thick for colder weather. Will have to investigate further some day but baby it's cold outside here till March.

Did have the right axle out a few years back to swap out 3PTH bolt. Feels like a spring time job. It's pretty cold up here in Northern Ontario till April. Do you think I would be causing more damage if I left it for now and limp thru the winter?

Hopefully its not a piece of bearing that's getting scooped up into the gear train only when in reverse. Could it be a piece of ice? Hope it's an issue with the brakes.

Don't believe it's ice. Going to remove brake shoes and take it from there. It's too cold and I'm really not healthy enough to dig into the innards right now. Might end up getting a tow truck to take it to the shop and let them deal with it.

(reply to post at 12:16:22 12/28/21) [/Well I took the shoes off. The backing plate was tight and the springs were fine. No signs of funny rubbing or wear. Did about 1/4 mile of snow blowing and no issues. Will have to wait and see.quote]
