And to think in the US many people get irate if they see a dog, much less a kid, in the back of a pickup...

Years ago I bought the sweetest cleanest nicest little used Suzuki moped. When I got it home I flipped the seat up and on the bottom side of the seat it said weight limit 160lbs. I laughed and thought to myself. Well I'm going to have to walk beside it. Gerald

When I was in Viet Nam this was very common. Saw a couple and they had chickens tied all over motor bike and was holding all they could hold. Bicycle's were used carrying more than I could haul in my truck. Had to be heavy duty. LOL

Probably on the way to the market...

Come back with 3-4 goats, dozen chickens, weeks worth of groceries, and a water buffalo!

I spent the better part of a year in Egypt, where such sights are common. The first time I saw three guys on a motorcycle running down the highway, I thought it was funny. When I saw a family of five riding on a 250 Jawa, I thought it was hilarious. But eventually I came to realize that these are just regular people trying to get through their day using the resources they have available to them. What seems preposterous to us is just business as usual for others.

A lot of such goes on in some countries, hey its cheap transportation but safety ??? lol

When the neighbor picked us up to work hay we always
rode in the back. Who wants a couple smelly kids in the
cab. Now people give me a hard time about the dog
riding in the bed.

It seems the big problem most of you are having with this is safety.
Their lack of safety really does not effect you or your ability to do things safer.
You might also view safety against practical in a different way if you did not live in such a rich country.
In the USA we have the ability to afford safety.
People in some other countries do not have this luxury.

I just cringe at the open toed shoe thing, and I could never go outdoors like that, let alone ride a bike. I wouldn't have toe left on my foot. I used to ride dirt bikes and quads, and always wore work boots or, riding boots. And those boots had LOTS of scuff marks! Even when I rode street bikes, I wore good tennis shoes. Mark.
