What was your 1st farm tractor you bought?

This is a good question for a rainy day like it is here today. What was the first tractor you bought to farm with when you started farming ? For me it was a International 1086 with cab and duals. Dad thought I had lost my mind.. He said it was way too big.A neighbor that we lease some land from had a retirement auction, and I was fortunate enough to be able to win the bid. It's been a dependable tough Ole bird. Grandaddy said his first was a Farmall model H bought new. He also said that the H did not stand for heaven when it came the time of year to have to take the cultivators on and off plus mounting a corn picker on it as it was the only tractor at the time, but it sure beat looking at a mules transmission all day, everyday.

1937 WC Allis Chalmers For $75. The reason it was sold was the owner crank started it and it was still in 1st gear (they have wobbly long shifter levers). When it started he was able to get the crank handle off the snout, but the tractor was 3 feet away from a big Oliver. The WC smashed into the mans leg pinning it leg against the flat surface of the Belt pully on the Oliver. The Crank snout rammed into his hamstrings and spun as it was shoved into the engine crankshaft. The tractor was backed off of him by his wife. I purchased the tractor 2 months after the incident. Both tractors were where they were. He had a severe limp, and was very happy to see it disappear from sight 50 feet from his main house door. I sold it to my brother and he sold it to a collector. It still survives in northern Indiana and appears in Tractor shows from time to time. Jim

MM 445 and 400 gallon sprayer, put myself through JR college with it. I was one of the few licensed applicators at the time.

A UE Moline. L.P.Gas, with the wide front, with a 4 row mounted corn cultivator, $400:00 Dollars. it was nice except for no brakes in reverse$

My first tractor was a Case 430, I bought at a neighbours retirement auction. The neighbour was a close friend of my dad. He stopped in one day and told me he knew that I had just started farming, and money was tight. But to just go ahead and buy anything I wanted at his auction, and we would talk about how I was going to pay for it later. So it was 1981, and interest rates were right around 20% . I bought the tractor for $2,000.00. The fella said take it home, and Ill drop in next week. When he stopped by, I told him I had $1,000.00 and I could give him a $100.00 each month for the next ten months, he said that was fine. It was a great little tractor!

Bought a NEW AC 170D went by the dealer the next day and he had a new black stripe 175 sitting in its place had a bad taste for that dealer for years. He should have told me the 170s were being rep[laced by the 175 , found another AC dealer and went clear thru the line until the Deutz take over somewhere around 1980.

Ill just say - when I started buying tractors. A Used repainted Farmall 806 gas with a new Westendorf TA-26 loader ( and wore out rear tires). It was in April , 1993. $8100. Still have it. Was money well spent. Its probably worth more now.

In 1968...1964 930 Case Western Special. Started farming that year...

I was in HS, went to an auction and bought a JD H for $100. Came with a 2 row cultivator. I was in heaven. Took it to Ag class and put a green coat of lipstick on it. It went up in flames when the barn burnt in 1967 or 68. I was a freshman in college at the time.

1949 to-20 Ferguson, plow, back blade, still have bill of sale 1099.00 from Farm Eq. sales Clintonville WI.still have it us it about every day

I took over the farm from my parents July 1,1974. I acquired 4 tractors with the farm, a 1944 MH 101Jr. standard, a 1952 8N, a 1960 MF 65 High Arch gas and a 1968 MF 165 High Arch diesel with a loader

Bought a Ford 640 to clear some property. 2 weeks later I bought a Ford 960. 2 months later a Farmall cub. This sickness started 5 years ago ....

Used dads Ford 850 for a few years after he passed but my first tractor was Ford 871 diesel with SOS trans, traded it for the 69 4000 I have today

Well the first tractor I owned was a John Deere 40T that my dad gave me when he upgraded to a 601 Ford. The first tractor that I bought was a Harry Ferguson TO30.

1953 WD,farm auction and I drove it 30 miles home. 7th grade,I drove it to school most days.

Bought a 70 gas when I was a junior in high school. First tractor used to farm with was a 4230 my freshman year of collage(1994).

Grandpa, I don't think there is a cure for the tractor sickness. If there is I haven't found out about it yet.

Depends on how you look at it. My dad had a A/C B and a JD B when I moved to the farm. Both hand start. He and I got a Ford 841S in 1980 or 81 and I still have it and I also have the 1935 JD B that he had that was my grandfathers

Late 70's a Cub that won't happen again. At that time my heart was not into working on a P.O.S. every time I got on it. : ) Life's to short to dink with a wanna be toy...

In the late 90s Dad gave me the 1946 John Deere B that he rescued from scrap. I sold it in 2003 thinking I'd never use it then bought a house in 2005, bought it back in 2006 and still have it. The man I sold it to and bought it back from is a family friend and his Dad bought the tractor for parts but passed away after buying it. Use the tractor for snowplowing and odd jobs. Also bought a Ford NAA last November.

JD 3010 in 1977, at a FHA auction. Took 3 more years until we started on our own, but it was the bg tractor the first year. It has a 3020 engine kit and rebuilt transmission, and just under 10,000 hours. Loader added in 1980. ROPS soon after. Still old reliable.

I bought a WC Allis Chalmers from a dealer that had been lent to the high school for ag class. We used it for running a buzz saw and skidding logs In the summer I partnered with some friends doing hay and oats. The WC became the raking tractor and wagon hauler. It performed well because it was more nimble than the Case

My first farm tractor was a 4430 purchased from an aunt and uncle in fall of 84. They lived nearby, no one in their family to farm, and they knew I really wanted to, so they retired. It had just under 3800 hours, I bought on five year contract for $15000. I also bought a disk, chisel plow, six row planter and cultivator, auger and 71 Ford F700 grain truck. Still use that tractor almost daily as chore tractor with westendorf loader on it almost all the time. It now has about 12800 hours. Ive never had the head off. However a lot of other things, including transmission have been fixed.

ought a used 1961 MF65gas in 1982 and just retired it last summer.

There sure was a many one of the one row Farmalls sold in this part of the country. I think about everyone had at least 1 if not more. On another note, I really enjoyed our talk the other day.

First tractor I bought was a 1941 Allis Chalmers C for $500 in 2009. It needed a little work but was pretty easy to get running and I bought it to skid small logs and pull a wagon in the red pine plantations I was thinning at the time. The farm came with a Massey Ferguson 35 that I had been using since 2001 but the AC was a lot more maneuverable in the woods. I kept it for about 6 or 7 months and traded it for a Farmall H, not as cute but about as nimble and lots more power and traction. Had that till late 2012 when I replaced it with the Farmall 300, which is about the ideal tractor for what I have been doing these last 10 years.

A D-19 was the first tractor I bought in about 76. Before that I had looked at a WD 45 on a farm sale. Told dad about it and he said no take my 51 WD. He had just bought his second 656 Farmall and didn't need it. The WD was the first tractor dad had bought new. Still have it plus three more.

It was a 460 International with a fast hitch. I had to rework the head but after that it was a decent tractor.

Massey Harris 101 given to me by a great aunt when I was 8. First one I paid money for Allis Chalmers D14, still have both.

1968 model 856 IH in 1974...That tractor was a horse in the field..It was capable of 190-200 horses when farming but when it was hot 150-160 was plenty as you couldn't keep it cool.
cvphoto111454.jpg

It also spent some time on the pulling track from 1974-85..

I kinda took over dads tractors, such as thry were.

My first was aTW20 at an auction sale. I went to see what it would go for, but I wasnt intending to buy it. Really didnt look it over all that well.....

Anyhow, itts still here 20+ years later, just got replaced by a NH8970 a year ago, but does a lot for me still.

I forget the year of the tractor but I bought an IH 756 diesel in 1971 for 4400 dollars. With some repairs, it turned into a very nice unit.

1967 ih 706 around 1989, I traded up some years later and it went to a ih 1466, now I have been working on a 1963 706 with a 282 motor, hope to have it finished this year.

Bought aCase 930 in 1980 just before I graduated from high school. Had a lot of trouble with it and it didn't stay long. Traded it on a Ford 8600 that was also trouble and didn't stay long.

In 1064 when I was 11, I bought a 1927 John Deere D. Solid rust and the engine was tight. Still have it. I don't have a good picture of it.

Thanks CR. I forgot to add that it is still here. Raised many crops of baccer and veggies with it. Call me anytime and if I can hear the phone I'll be there. I have a 574 question for you sometime. Merry Christmas!

1206--Let me guess--You took it to the pulls--got rich and lived happily ever after!!!!---Tee

Bought a 4366 at Yoder and Frey in Archbold,OH in 1988. Tractor still
is in the neighborhood at work.

On behalf of my father; who past in 1991 His first tractor was a Ford 9N then as he worked for a local IHC dealer he bought the IHC Farmall BM with mower and cultivator scuflers which I tilled may a row of corn with. Still have the BN and use it regularly. Grand all round tractor wonderful to drive nimble.
Merry Christmas & happy new year to all.
Wm

1948, Ford 8N. Still have it. It is 60 years older than my oldest grandson. I will give it to him on his 15th birthday. The Ford will be 75 years old then.

Farmall Super B, $450 about 1979 from guy who grew up on the farm where the family lived as he was growing up and the tractor had spent its life. I had no implements to fit it other than a 5' shredder and it labored to run that at any speed. But seemed to crank and run OK otherwise.

Not long after that International had a large truck/tractor dealership in the town where I worked and I found a 1974 IH 464 gas with new paint, 1 rear tire, and new battery for $4500. It was the light at the end of the tunnel for me....newbie to farm life.

First tractor that I personally bought was a 1962 year make Massey Ferguson model 50 Diesel. Still on the farm, still earning its keep.

Mine was a CA allis chalmers, bought a small farm and needed a tractor to raise some tobacco with. Came with mounted cultivators, 2=14 plow and a disc.

Got a 1943 Farmall H in 1965 and a mccormick WD9 from S E North Dakota the next year. Worked them both HARD and both still run great. Gary.

It was May 1973 I bought a 1950 SC Case tricycle front end with cultivators at public sale. I knew the tractor and paid $550.00 for it.
Here it is almost 2022 and all I've done to it is tires, oil changes, and tune-ups It worked our 106 acre farm with a 1950 Case DC tricycle front end and M&W engine kit and a 1946 VAC Case with tricycle front end. Have used CEN-PE-CO oil and never had any engine trouble. Life is good with CASE EQUIPMENT.

A 1953 Super H which I still have, paid 500 for it. I narrowly missed a MM model Z at an auction, I bid to 75 and it went for 80. Had I won that bid the Z would have been my first tractor . Guess it turned out well enough.

1961 Case 730 gas.

never did get it going. i had to bust the pistons apart clear to the skirt before they would free up on #2 & 3. don't leave the exhaust open...

We had a IH 454 gas and a 464 diesel at one time. Both were good handy sized tractors except for the gas engine in the 454. Tried to find a 179 diesel engine to replace it with, but didn't have any luck. Ultimately both tractors eventually got traded up. Looking back I wish we would have kept 1 of them.

I leased the family ranch in 1980, bought a NH 1049 sp balewagon and in 81 I bought a Case 2470 in Grainfield Kansas. Balewagon went in 85 as I changed to round bales. Still have the 2470 but havn't used it for four years.

I had 3 problems with mine: Engine was hard to start especially in the winter, for a 6'5 guy at 240-50# operators station was tight, and third the behind the seat gas tank was in the way of 3 point servicing/operation.

first tractor my grandpa on my moms side bought was a 1951 john deere MC brand new for his steep 60 acres of hillside orchard work in washington county, oregon. The tractor slowly replaced the horses in the next few years. The tractor worked alone til the early 2000s. tractor well used but is still in operation.

first tractor my grandpa on my dads side bought was a fordson. It was said to have a water pump, governor, magneto, etc. It started well, ran well, and transmission was quiet

first tractor my dad bought was a 1942 Case LA in 1971 for $550. Tractor had been traded in at a IH lot and was painted later two tone and my dad thought it was a 600 from the highway but upon closer inspection, found its true identity.

first tractor i bought was a 1952 farmall super A in 1997 for $1500 with 3 point hitch, brush mower, blade and cultivators. Sold it a decade later to help pay for college

Blizzard conditions where I am in Iceland right now so its a good time to tell about my first tractor. Its a 1955 or 56 Massey Ferguson F40 that I bought at auction. Didnt think Id be the high bidder but surprisenow I owned a tractor with a good loader. Does firewood duty, pulls down the many dead ash trees around my place, lifts things that are too heavy for me. Primitive by todays standards but a big improvement over how I was doing things pre-tractor. Ive purchased a boom pole and a carry/all for the rear. Next project will be to build a box back there to get more firewood moved in one trip. Ive bought a couple other tractors that turned into projects so I sent them down the road along with a lot of other junk.
