Homeowners Insurance

I received my bill for my insurance today. In the summary of charges was a $ 5.00 charge called invoice fee. I pay semi annually. The agents secretary said this was something new. Anybody else heard of this?

Insurance companies, and a lot of other places actually, are wanting to go/pushing for paperless. For the consumer, that entails auto-pay and no billing. All notifications come by e-mail. For alot of places, the bulk of thier customer pool has went to this. So, mailing paper billing to a few remaining paper billing customers, is viewed by the company as a un-needed expense. And apparently, are now passing that expense on to the customer.
My insurance companies paper bill me far in advance. 2 months in some cases. I won't sign up for thier auto-pay. I'm not going to pay my high dollar premium payments that far in advance, if auto withdrawal happens at the same time thier paper billing goes out. Stands to reason that it would. And I'm not signing up for that.

I like to pay annually. I have to pay an extra fee because I don't allow them to deduct monthly from my checking account. I switched last year. My old company gave me a discount for an annual payment. This new company saves me a few hundred a year, so I guess I can live with it. It seems like they like to do everything electronically. I even had to print my own proof of insurance cards to carry in the vehicles.

American Family Insurance has had the same $5 invoice fee for several years. They pay for the first invoice per year, you pay the fee each time they have to send out another invoice. If you pay annually, there is no invoice fee. If you pay monthly, you pay eleven invoice fees.

Companies here, mostly utilities, are charging for paper billing. If they didn't send so much junk advertising in with the bill maybe they wouldn't have to charge for it.

I had a similar thing a few years ago when my bank began charging $2 per month to mail a statement. I switched to online statements to avoid the fee.

Amen to THAT! 90% of the stuff I get from my part B provider is advertisement for some other product, of course ya never know so you have to look at it. They could lower my premiums 10 percent for what they pi$$ away on that, not to mention the waste in principle. gm

And what about people that don't have computer service or don't have a computer they use. I know of some whom don't have internet or a computer for that nonsense.

They pay the invoice fee.

"That's not fair!" Well, the folks that don't have internet or computers are generally of the age where they should have learned long ago that life ain't fair.

The point of the fee is to encourage people to move to online billing and payment, NOT a "money grab." How is it a money grab when the overwhelmin majority switches to online billing to avoid the fee?

You ask Anybody else heard of this?

YES Ive heard of that plus all other sorts of FEES one might imagine. Of course, one has the choice NOT to pay it and take the consequences which may even result in cancellation !!!!!!

On some accounts I may (subject to terms) chose to pay online, maybe auto pay maybe not, maybe using a CC maybe not, maybe mail a check maybe not, maybe use a drive by window payment maybe not THERES OFTEN SEVERAL CHOICES OF PAYMENT METHODS so I take a hard look at all the options and different fees and consequences then make the best choice for my circumstances.

Seems more and more I find there to be NO CASH payment methods at certain places CARDS ONLY they refuse hard cash !!!!!!!

Also for Gen x it seems their phone is used to pay ??????

Oh well for us old retired farts its tough out there lol

Well, here's an good example of proof that banks do NOT want to handle cash these days. After our annual tractor pull and show in August, our club deposits a good lump of money all at once ...... for example, the gate receipts are all done in cash as are raffle tickets, 50/50 cash split sales, clothing/hat sales, etc. We don't use any kind of electronic payment options for people who show up. This year, our bank charged us for depositing over $5000 in cash at one time. I can't remember the amount and really that doesn't matter. The fact is that they did charge us. A simple phone call straightened it out and the charges were reversed, but the bottom line is the message. Cash will eventually disappear for the most part .... not this year or next or even in 10 years, but eventually it will just like EV's are going to be the norm ..... it's gonna happen.

My insurance went down after. The insurance secretary noticed I was being charged a surcharge. She removed it.
Happy camper.

We had both homeowner's and vehicle insurance with American Family for years. Then several years ago, we refinanced our acreage to get a lower interest rate and the loan officer who handled our refi was appalled at how much we were paying for insurance.

We went to a local independent agent and our insurance costs were cut almost in half.

Just sayin...

We have a number of different insurance companies with the rental houses. I think all of them charge a fee if you don't pay for the full year.

For our auto insurance, Progressive gives a substantial discount if you pay for the full year.

(quoted from post at 11:50:11 12/15/21) I realize that, but how else was I supposed get it.

I did not read all the intervening opinions, but the answer to your question is that you should log into your account on their web site and download your paperwork. Or simply pay your bill on there if you do not want the paperwork. They will undoubtedly send you an email in advance when you should be looking for the bill online.

GONE are the days when all you had to due was (watch the mail)if you are trying to help settle an estate. PC is locked and all online payments are out of reach.

this is interesting. Our local power coop started charging monthy for paper billing monthly. I just paid it and kept doing things the old way. The power company had a crash in the electronic department. Did not have the capacity to... digest all of the tranactions. Hd fraud, hackers, compromised credit card and bank information for all of it's patrons. Little old me warned them (all new administration) along with other patrons of this future issue before it happened due to my familiarity with this system. I was told how dumb I was. Look at it now. They are in the red for unmeasurable money due toneglegince.

Agree.

Our insurance company sends a several page description of coverages with a single, hard to find line that says This not a bill. Then two months later the actual bill arrives in the mail.

WI.electric charges 9.95 if you pay on line they call it a convenience fee was 2.95 so now i just send a check just one more way to stick it to the little guy
