Are you organized?

When you walk into your shop what do you see. For myself I see a lot of stuff laying around. Tools not put away. Several projects not finished. Some may see this as a mess. To me this is my shop. If you don't like it stay out. I know where I can find any tool I need. I usually know where everything is. a couple times a year I do try to get organized. It doesn't last long. My brother had his shop one level below mine. That's where Dad would load hay. His tools were for the most part well organized, Mostly Snap-on tools. Mine area mixture of American, and some Chinese. When I work in his area, I try to keep his tools put away out of respect for him. I have a friend who is a Neet freak. everything is well organized. I will never be like him. I think part of my problem is, I hurry to finish something, and get going, and will put my tools away later, and later, and later. I hope some of you are better organized than I am. Stan

Not even close

my oldest brother looked totally disorganized. He had done some work ab0ut 2 years earlier for one of two guys fr0m the tractor club wh0 had come over for something. they were standing in the door 0f his piled high shop and the 0ne that had never seen his shop said, I wouldn't let a guy like that touch anything of mine. His friend said, Joe, you remember working on my old tractor.
yeah.
do you still have that old whatever that came off of it?
Yeah.
Can I have it.
He walked over to the side 0f the shop and moved a couple of things and pulled out his part and handed it to him.
I don't care what anybody says, if he can put his hand on it that quick, he is organized.

That is a good synopsis, later, later, later.... happens, been there done that lol !
I do try to at least put tools back in one of the 2 stand up boxes I have, that way I know where they are, the bucket and any horizontal surface is always fair game, but I know better to say the least LOL !

Have to be. I'm such a scatterbrain that if I don't keep things organized, I can't find anything.

Typically I clean all my tools and put them all away at the end of each day/project. Toolboxes organized well enough that I can see if anything is missing with a glance.

My organization isn't too good either despite trying to be. I don't really have a shop for working on tractors so my tools are stored in my 1-car garage that I use for a wood working shop and my tractor work gets done outside. That means when I have parts off something my saw table becomes a bench for them which also is a bench for the tools I'm using. I've started trying to put the tools back as soon as I'm finished with one only to find out much of the time I need it again before I'm actually done using it. My biggest problem is I own too much stuff for the places I have to put stuff. I get by with what I have so I guess there are worse problems in the world.

I have a rule I ALWAYS put my tools away end of every day, its so much simpler at 71 I dont remember as well as used to so its much simpler to put them away then try to remember when it where I last used it!!!

Stan,
I have enlarged 2 pole barn and my mimi Menards warehouse.
I cleaned all three and organizing all 3.

Warehouse is an old horse barn. I'm storing 2 lawn mowers. Both work. I removed the covers so no one wanted to steal them. It worked.

This is my happy place. No lights needed. All natural lights, except at night

I don't like

Working in a dirty place. Hate spending a second looking for a tool. I only have a person to be mad at if I can't find a tool.
Hate
cvphoto110839.jpg

Talking to myself, where did I last use the tool?
Can't find pics of my other pole barn. I removed 100 pounds of dirt and stink bugs.
Took a half day just cleaning the floor.

My hand tools have to be hanging on nails otherwise out of sight out of mind. I can't find them. All my tools have a place. No one uses my tools. I dislike working ar a friend's place. I have them bring what they want me to work on to my place.

Lost pictures of my other pole barn.

I like my shop clean and organized. I put stuff away every evening. My wife....... Not so much. But she is in the shop working right along with me! She just loves a pile of tools in a bucket or bag.... Grrrrr.

That engine is looking like new money : )

My tools are my livelihood I have to put them up keep and them organized. In my younger days I pushed it hard let them pile up I always lost a tool I forgot about that got expensive that's where I learned to put them up so I could keep up with them better. It also helps encase you left a bolt are a cover off. When I trained new help it was mandatory they organized the tools and job site at the end of the day. I pushed them hard to work organized and CLEAN. If they could not pick up that simple tast they were gone.

I can pile a table up with junk as good as anyone its one of my bad habits : (

A shop just like mine. Problem is we have two shops one on each side of town, ones as bad as the other. I need one of those 60 x 100 all heated shops and move everything there. In my dreams!!

I like to keep my shop at least somewhat organized. As said, I hate trying to find where I last used something.

If I knew where to put the stuff, I would do that. Where or how do you store junk? You know that stuff that you might need for a project, but maybe not. I have cleaned my work bench by pushing the little stuff into buckets. The last two days I have sorted thru three buckets. I found a loaded 30-06 shell. I have never owned one. Maybe it was necked down to a .270.

My shop has to be clean and well organized or I go a little nuts. I wasn't always that way but cannot function now in a messy space. If I am in the middle of a big project and parts and tools are piled up all over, I will stop and organize and put tools away and start fresh. It might sound crazy to some, but its the only way for me.

I have been working on getting things cleaned up more because I have been having memory trouble. Like the other day I had to work on something that was not so old. I knew that I had a set of Metric tools somewhere. Took a while but I found them all together!

You can see how bright the floor is from the sunlight coming in.

It's my happy place. Retired, My clock out time is 4AM.
Never had to go inside after dark. Built the barn at the end of 2019,

Idont have a big shop,,a good reason to put stuff away,,or there will be no room to work
Its easy to clean up,,if you make a place for everything,,,and you put things back it the place,,its a lot easier than searching for stuff,,or misplacing tools,,my 02! lol

Love to go work (lol usually spend more time taking it apart, seeing how it works) on stuff out in the shop, I try to clean up afterwards, and make sure I clean the tools once I am done. Our shop is an organized mess, we know where everything is.

NO!!! I am a pile it, pile it here, pile it there, pile it anywhere I can . I do try to pick up tools from time to time, my biggest problem is finding what I just had in my hand a minute ago!!
