5300 JD Not Starting

My 5300 JD will not start unless I hook the charger up and boost the battery. The battery is fully charged.

The starter relay had went out and I replaced it. But it was getting harder to start before that.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

I would try a different battery, voltmeters don't tell the whole story. What is the battery voltage if when your cranking it without a charger connected?

A battery can be fully charged but still be defective. Need to load test it. A local repair shop might be able to do a quick load test for you.

This may not be your problem. My JD 401b industrial had about the same problem. Very hard to start. My problem was a weak lift pump. installed a new pump, it starts good now. Stan

I have not load tested the battery, I did put in another battery I had in the shop in to try it. But it was an older battery also.
Thanks, I will load test the battery and check the voltage while trying to crank the tractor.

As suggested: Have the battery load tested and try boosting it with a [u:4d4acce77d]heavy[/u:4d4acce77d] set of booster cables. Cheap cables are minimal if any help. Check voltage at the battery when stopped and when cranking to compare.

Check both ends of the battery cables for a bad internal connection at a lug, as well as making sure the connection points are clean. If a connection feels warmer to the touch than others it is a sign of resistance in that connection.

Is the starter mounting clean, as it provides the ground for the starter?

Make sure the tractor is in park or neutral and try using a jumper wire and applying power direct to the solenoid stud the wire from the switch is connected to. That will rule out problems between the switch and solenoid wiring.

The starter may be bad but rule other things out to avoid having the same issue with a new starter.

Quick test;

Locate the solenoid, and the ground connection from the batt.

Crank the engine without the booster cables for ~12 seconds.

With a bare finger, briefly touch the ground connection from battery, then both terms of the solenoid, and the lug on the starter.

Check if any of them are very hot. The hot one is where the resistance is located. If none of them are hot, then battery or starter.

My 5055D started doing that three months after I got it, dealer came out, diagnosed it as a bad starter. He replaced the starter and have had no problems since.

Try running a separate ground, preferably near the starter. It never ceases to amaze me how many electrical problems are the result of a poor ground or failed ground cable.

Turns out the battery had a bad cell. When starting the voltage would drop to around 10 volts. Tested the starter and it was good.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help!!

So installed a new battery and the tractor is ready to get back to work.
