What is the soft plug looking hole on the back of the rearend housingfor on a 1941 wc ?

The plug covers the hole used to create the pinion bearing bores, allowing the machine tooling to be accurate. The boring bar
passed through from front to back while the housing was rigidly held in alignment to the drive axle bores. Jim
