Maple Syrup shortage

There is said to be a worldwide shortage of maple syrup. The situation is deemed to be so serious that Canada has decided to release 50 million pounds of the stuff from
its Strategic Maple Syrup Reserves. This is reported to be a 'Sticky Situation'. (;>))

Yes, I heard about this too and the day it was announced the price of syrup actually went up. Supposedly the shortage was caused earlier this year by the canadian govt placing a moratorium on planting maple trees because it was determined they released too much methane in to the atmosphere.

Good to know, therefore I'll go out and hug my (Big Leaf Maple) tree and leaf. Plus a methane release was noted.

Canada has millions of untapped trees.
The OPEC of maple syrup; Quebec Maple Syrup Producers; controls the production and store any excess to keep the price artificially raised. Now that the demand is high enough it will not affect the price; and they got caught with their pants down by not having enough supply to meet demand this year; they will release some of the lower priced reserves into a high priced supply chain to stabilize the market.
They will just tap more trees next year to replenish the reserves.

Basically the same way cane sugar supply chain works.

USA farmers are their own worst enemy.
Price of corn is up so they plant corn ditch to ditch.
This gluts the market of corn and the price of corn goes down and bean prices go up.
Next year they plant beans ditch to ditch and repeat the cycle.

Dairy guys are the same way.
Price of milk is up buy more cows and flood the market.

Then you look at the sugar cane cartel.
They do not plant the headlands.
Have nice ditches crossing the fields so no tile needed.
But have a higher profit per acre than corn farmers.
What do they do differant ????
They control production numbers and place tariffs on imported sugar.

Here is something to consider: in this area we have another invasive insect called the spotted lantern fly. They look like a moth and are destructive to fruit bearing trees. Thanks you-know-who. Anyway, we had these things for the first time here this year. They swarmed our 3 sugar maples we have along the driveway and laid thousands of eggs. My worry is these lantern flies are going to do a number on the sugar maples equal to what happened with ash trees. Be warned. Coming to a town near you.

We've tried. US Dairy created a cartel called CWT or Cooperatives working together. We each had an assessment of either 5 or 10 cents per hundredweight. The money was to be used for export assistance and to buy and slaughter dairy cattle in times of excess.

It lasted a couple of years, or at least the herd buyout part did. In about 2006 or 2007 a federal judge ruled it price fixing or something similar, and CWT was no longer able to try and control supply.

So I guess if I want some more syrup I will just tap in the woods next spring and have enough for a few years. Depending on how many and how much I get. I do need a better pan for the boiling if anybody knows where to get one now days. In searching all I find is evaporators with small pans about 3 feet or so square. I'm looking for one about 38 inches by about 7 feet long and close to 10 inches deep. Give or take a wee bit on size. This is the approximate size of the one we use.
