The tractor is a copy of a Zetor Chrystal. They were made in different parts of the then Soviet Union. Zetor made the engines and swapped them for transmission from Ursus and Fortschritt bought skid units, I believe. At one time, Ursus were building transmission and 4WD systems for Massey Ferguson.

The chopper was quite a good machine, we had a couple in our area. My neighbour, an agricultural contractor, ran Fortschritt combine harvesters which also proved reliable and lasted well. The factory was in East Germany and was bought by Case IH in 1997.

The choppers were also sold as Mengele.

They didn't pick that name, it was their family name. Dr. Josef Mengele, AKA The Angel of Death, was the oldest son of the founder, Karl Mengele. Josef worked as a sales rep for the company in South America, after he fled from Europe to avoid capture.

Fascinating. So it seems the family wasn't so embarrassed by Josef's reputation that they thought it necessary to change the company name.

It looks like they did just that. With a little internet snooping I found an article which gave an about 3 mile long name for the family firm. It also indicated Josef didn't work for the family firm, but was supported by them while laying low in South America.

I learn something new everyday on here. I knew he slipped to South America buy figured he was in hiding not working as a salesman. It's a shame the Mossad did not get ahold of him.
