Halloween story

My neighbor, a quarter mile from me at our closest, was an International devotee. He had a couple of M's, a couple of H's and a next newer model IH that I can't remember the model designation. I was a John Deere two cylinder fan, but I loved to listen to his IH tractors on a cool dark evening. He confided to me that he also liked hearing my old JD's in the night air. Neither of us knew anything about the other brands. He was a bachelor and his sweet and devout Christian mother shared his home. He ordered a new 666, and didn't discuss it with his mother. On the day that it was delivered, she raised a ruckus, demanding that he send it back to the dealer. He refused and kept the tractor until his death. His mother predicted failure and destitution as a reward for buying a tractor with such a devilish numeral. That old 666 was sold to an equipment jockey not long after the neighbor's death and many years after the mother's death, but I still remember it as being a mighty fine tractor, disregarding the numeral painted on the sheet metal.

A final bit of irony - the only tractor on that farm now is a modern JD with front wheel assist and a fancy loader.

666 , the mark of the beast. Or the sign of the Devil. I have watched this model tractor bring less money on auction sales than what it should be worth. Many just outright refused to consider a tractor with those numbers on it. I have a 966, and it has been a devil of a good tractor.

Something similar to why many people in Mexico wouldnt by a Chevy Nova,Nova in Spanish apparently means no go

A great story and I remember thinking about it when International introduced that tractor. I suspected that a few and maybe more than a few would not buy a tractor with those numbers on them. Some born-again Christian pilots were attending training on the new French Puma helicopter their company was buying when some other pilots decided to play a joke on them by painting triple 6's on the insides of the engine cowling access doors. Those born-again pilots refused to fly that helicopter until the access doors were replaced. That helicopter was subsequently purchased by none other than our famous past prez. DJT. One morning, as a good friend of mine was starting it, it caught on fire and burned to the axles.

Farm next to ours had a 666 gas that was bought brand new. Had clam shell fenders. Neighbor used it up until he passed away, Im not sure where it ended up, it was always shedded and in excellent condition.

Pretty good story...heard a lot of similar story's about those tractors over the years.I've had mine for a long time, their a damn good tractor(no pun intended). The triple six and the six eighty six basically the some tractor.I have both.My Farmall 666 is a late 1976,my International 686 is a 1977 model.I think 1976 was last year International used the Farmall name on their tractors until just recently. Here'a picture of my 666 and my 686 with mount o matic loader.

In my opinion International built some of the best looking tractors ever made...those rear spoke wheels are iconic.
