A veterans day story

My wife and I were sitting in a restaurant sharing a hamburger today. The restaurant was offering a free burger to any veteran who registered in their royalty program by Nov 1. I looked out the window and saw a man in full dress uniform climb out of a car. He had a white cane and a silver coronet under his arm. He walked to the restaurant unassisted leaving his driver at the car. He came into the lobby and proceeded to play taps so beautifully that it brought tears to your eyes. He stopped, picked up a carryout, and walked back to his car. He was not hired and, apparently, unexpected. I glanced over at the bar and the bartender had tears. It was something to hear. There is nothing quite like taps when it is played right.

I would like to be that guy and play TAPS at the funerals instead of watching someone fake playing them.

Only part you can pick on is, "who registered in their loyalty program by November 1st."

How about just give the vet a free burger no strings attached, and not use the day to pad your marketing program's numbers?

If a vet did their homework yesterday they could make themselves sick on all the freebie meals. One of my veteran coworkers had hit Denny's, Wendy's, and Dunkin Donuts by 8AM.

Day is Done, the real name of TAPS is really a beautiful song when sung but nobody ever sings it anymore. Hearing TAPS played at funerals really hits the heart in everyone that I've everyone that I know of.

SDE,

I think I know what you mean when you say....Fake play them..... My brother-in-law was a retired warrant officer from the Navy. He died a couple of years ago. At the funeral, there was a contingent of military people conducting the military portion of the funeral. A man played TAPS on a trumpet, but in fact, he didn't play anything with the trumpet. It was shaped like a trumpet. He held it up to his mouth like he was playing it, but it was actually an electronic device with recorded music. It sounded pretty good but I'd never heard of or seen anything like that before.

Hopefully the restaurant didn't charge him for the takeout or at least give him a deal on it.

I was in line at a subway with my brother down in Florida on a visit a while back and he had his Vietnam Vet hat on and we did visit a little with the guy ahead of us. After my cheap brother and I got done arguing over who was going to pay, LOL, the casher said the guy ahead of us picked up our 20 dollar tab and to thank my brother for his service. He was already gone so we didn't even get to thank him.

Hi Dave,
Great to hear from you and also a great story. Thanks for sharing. Many years ago our oldest daughter came home from kindergarten and said that she hoped that Dr. Pinkston and Dr. Crouter had a good day today. (local veterinarians and personal friends) My wife and I both said that we also hoped they had a nice day but why is today so special? She quickly informed us that today is Vets Day. Art Linkletter would of had a picnic with her.

Great to hear stories like that. Reveille and taps are played on military bases each day, every one stops. If you see the flag, or hear the music you solute. Stan

They have used one here for several years, just not enough people left to play the real interment.
