Aluminum roof repair

Does anyone have suggestions of what works for repairing an older aluminum roof, where a falling branch poked a 2 inch by 8 inch hole? Its old roofing, so I dont think I can just swap in a panel, or even find a scrap piece of the same roofing to make a nice patch. Thinking Ill try to make a patch out of something similar, and try to insert it, under & over like a shingle. And then put a bunch of silicone on it. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Look for an aluminum repair material for Semi trailers. I saw on of the guys stick some on a regular roof it has a tar/something stickum with an aluminum on top will stick to an aluminum trailer roof and not leak or blow off must be reasonably good for what you want. Probably never gets replaced on the trailer roof till they junk the trailer either. I don;t know what they call it. I would suppose you could get it at most any truck& trailer repair parts house.

Use similar metals to avoid galvanic action. You could rivet with aluminum rivets. Aluminum caulk to seal and match.

I agree. Definitely don't use dissimilar materials. I have a bunch of aircraft aluminum from which a friend patched his trailer. But that doesn't do you any good.

Do you know anyone that has a race car? Aluminum body panels are prepainted with many colors available. They will have many scrap pieces around, at least the shop I helped on the car did. Dirt late model shop.

How about a piece of rolled roofing material. Stick it down with the black sticky stuff that comes in a Henrys gallon container. Paint it silver when the stuff dries. Stan

Try to straighten the original metal as best you can to close up the hole, then make a piece to go underneath slathered in sealer which you can pop rivet in place and follow with more sealer on top to smooth it out.Dont be cheap when you purchase the sealer, done right the repair will outlast you,

You need something that is going to bend easily. I would use aluminum flashing. Good cleaning is necessary due to the oxide. You need your sealant to stick to the aluminum not the oxide. Mild acid like vinegar would be good.

I used a piece of "ice guard" covered with a piece of flashing and screwed down with roofing screws. The adhesive on the ice guard is almost impossible to remove after it is in place and is impervious to water.

I have an aluminum roof on A lean-to shed that I repaired with aluminum sheet to patch some holes. I used the aluminum solder to seal it around the perimeter. All that is needed is a propane torch. No leaks after 5 years. The metal must be very clean where soldering
