Char-Lynn Power Steering

The power steering motor on my Oliver S88 was always damp. I took it off and put seals in it and now when I start the tractor and try to turn the steering wheel. I shakes back and forth non-stop until I shut the tractor off.

I sure looks like I put it back together correctly as there doesn't seem to much to it. I've had it off and on several times.

Any help would be appreciated.

Internal splined parts have to be
correctly timed to each other, you need
to find a manual, unless someone posts
the exact details.

In my years of experience I would say 8 out of 10 laymen that attempt to go in one fail. We finally
started charging more for basket jobs or units brought in disassembled . If you did not have the
manual and follow it perfectly you have it put together wrong.

I did the same thing on a forklift once.

Be careful, the shaking can be violent and powerful! Expect the unexpected, it
can also spin! Keep your fingers out until you trust it, it can also take off
when touched!!!

I finally got it back together correctly, took many, many trial assemblies, but I
finally got it. It will go back many ways, but only work when it's right.

I tried asking for help from the dealer, they told me they had no information,
the unit was not serviceable, they never try to seal them just replace, and yes
they have them in stock... For about twice the value of the forklift!!!!!

Keep changing the positions of each component, I can't tell you what I finally
did to fix it, that was 20+ years ago. Document what you do so you don't waste
time doing it wrong, take pictures. Hint, examine the mating surfaces carefully,
you might see some rust stains or paint markings that will give some clue how it
originally was assembled.

Good luck, be careful!

The first one I put new seals in did the same thing. I found this illustration from a Char-Lynn manual. The
ends of the slot in the drive need to line up with the low valley spots in the star gear.

Hello Belray welcome to YT! Do you remember the number
of your unit? If yours is a 207-x.. model the attached link
will give you info on how to assemble it correctly, this may
also apply to 217-x.. models. The information is provided
by Midwest Steering in Missouri. Follow all the instructions,
but as an example in figure 16, the 6 lobed gerotor center
has to have a lobe aligned in the correct orientation to the
pin hole in the shaft. Without following these instructions
there is no markings that would indicate it should be
assembled in a certain position. If you are using regular
Orings on the shafts, I would double check if that is correct.
Many of them use quad-rings which will last much longer in
that service compared to a regular Orings. Best of luck!
Edit to add: Are you sure the supply and return are connected correct as before? I think that generally makes the wheel turn one direction uncontrollably when the engine is started. If you have issues that you cannot figure out call Midwest, they seem to be real helpful.

Lining up the gyrator valley with the shaft pin worked. Thank you for the help. The picture diagram was very helpful.
