Running used motor oil in a John Deere R

I had a hair brained idea the other day and Ive heard of diesel techs running used ATF and motor oil in their pre emission diesel trucks and was wondering if this is a good idea or a really bad one. With diesel getting expensive these days and I have a lot of clean used oil. Most of the used oil I have is John Deere plus 50 that I run in all of my old two bangers.

i sure would not be running used oil through any injection pumps, plus it will be hard on filters also. new oil is no problem if diluted . not sure what u mean by clean used oil? how can dirty black oil be clean?

I have changed oil in my gas puller despite it being stll clean looking. The only problem I would have would be keeping it clean while getting it drained.

I filtered some used oil out of cars and burned it before a few passes through a doubled paint filter and a rag and a magnet you could make it look like new but the process took forever

Not sure how your tractor would compare to a 930 case. But I know 2 people who run used oil mixed with diesel fuel and old deep fry oil in there 30 series cases. Neither one of them have any trouble except they change fuel filters oftener. They dont run it in winter though.

I don't know about used oil but some of those old diesels specified multi-fuel capability. I know Caterpillar could use multiple fuels.

hat's an old, tried and true way of stretching your fuel dollars. I'm sure you could find lots of info on the net about effective ways to filter the oil before adding it to the fuel.

fill some barrels with used oil and the next generation will have clean oil, after a long shelf life it does get clean. dont know what they will use it for in an electric car. lol.

A local trucking company years ago had about fifty trucks, and the used oil went straight into the 10,000 gallon fuel supply tank. Never had any trouble, fuel was always tainted black though.

I have put new oil in fuel filters when changing to prime with. Not tried used oil. It will burn straight oil with a good bit of smoke from it. I normally use fuel oil to fill filters with though if non available I did the oil thing. I know of a trucking company that did that with old/used engine oil.

New a guy years ago that bought a brand new Pete early to mid 70's with a 1693 cat in it. He put all of the used oil in the fuel tanks. Not all at once of course. At a million miles the the engine was still all origonal. I couldn't tell ya how often he changed fuel filters. RB

Are we talking burning straight used oil in a diesel engine? Or adding a little bit to the diesel tank? I normally add a little "new" oil to the tank when I fill up the diesels. I've considered adding used hydraulic oil since it usually looks as clean as new when I drain it.

Local guy burns nothing but waste oil in his 90's powerstroke; filters, then runs it through a centrifuge and mixes it 4:1 with kerosene.
I put just short of 300K on a diesel Benz burning used fryer oil with no ill effects and have burned it in my Allis 6070. A bit less of power than #2, but smooth and quiet. Would be burning it today but the bloody People's Progressive Republic of NY declared Veg an environmental hazard and killed the sources for used oil. One now needs a special State license to pick up or transport used veg and used oil generators have to be able to prove that it's being handled by a licensed firm or big penalties all of those involved.

I'm sticking with catalogue pages in the biffy ..... not sure if the sewage drains like it but it beats buying toilet paper.

No kidding?!!!! I hadn't heard that. Freakin' NYS is always on the look out for a way to screw everything up!

For sure. I had a good run, burned veg for almost ten years, saved a bundle in fuel costs.
I had barrels with full sized "barrel funnels" right outside the back door of a number of establishments. I picked up weekly so it was convenient and sanitary for the restaurants. I go by these places now and they have 5 yard dumpsters that they have to hoist their grease containers over to dump into, often spilling in the process creating stinking fly infested spill zones around every one, and it costs them a bundle to boot. I took care of their grease problem, in a clean sanitary manner, at no cost to them.

I've never burned old oil in a tractor.
I have burned old mixed gas/oil in gas tractors.
I use 75-90 Gl in Kaw mule.
I change oil every 100 hours since it was new.
The front differential has metal filings in it more than the rear.
Oil is clean looking, except for metal.

I let it set in a plastic bottle, metal particles settle out, use GL oil in tractor differential.

Getting fewer filings, so I may not change it as often.

We used to have a man who burned power Co transformer oil in large JD 2 cylinders to generate electricity and got paid for disposing of the oil.
