Thanks for posting that Larry.
Lots of memories in a barn like that.
And I love that type of roof.
Just wish would spell it correctly with 2 L's in the name .LOL

Larry, funny thing about folks in other parts of the country, I always thought NJ was way over populated and much more city. Never figured there would be farms there. When I was 14 my folks moved us to Alabama. I was sure Alabama was one big flat cotton field, with big plantation homes. Surprised me when we got here and there was mountains, woods, lakes, rivers and yes cotton fields, but not huge ones you can't see the end of. (Love that barn!)

Yes that is a nice looking old dairy barn and well worth fixing the roof. In my area there are a lot of older barns that are unused and being neglected.

Larry,
The barn was made for dairy cows.
What can anyone re-purpose it for?
Sad the barn is dying.
It's a white elephant.

Best thing that happened to our dairy barn was it burnt.

Lots of barns around with that style of roof here Larry, but most are built on a stone foundation. So the stable is often stone walls, built into the side of a hill. That way you can drive right into the upstairs of the barn on the level, and the cows can walk out the other side of the barn on the level too. Old barns are disappearing fast. No one really has any desire to work in them, and few people keep livestock anymore.

Who ever built this one when new, must of previously worked in one that was awful dark inside. Don't think I have ever seen one with so many windows in the side wall. Makes me wonder how many barn windows where tinned or metal sided over, after barns were electrified with light bulbs inside.

The windows are likely for ventilation as well as light
My barn is a bank barn built on level ground
The prevailing winds are from the west
So the west wall is solid
The other walls are a row of windows all of which can be opened for ventilation
If youve been in closed barn with a bunch of cattle, youll smell why

Geo. You say no way to reuse them. There are several around here they opened them up for machinery. Room for combines and sprayers in them. My brother has opened one up to use for a shop with a 16ft high door and 24 wide. He cut the old mow out put 2, 1/4x4 inch angles up the opposite corners of the timbers to hold them with the angles in the cement floor. Then put 2x8or 10's from the eaves up to the middle of the peak from each side bolted to together at the peak and bolted to the timber going up to the purlin plate at the hip this holds it from shifting sideways then the old braces in the lower portion of the barn hold it endways with a couple new braces he put in. For the crosswise holding between the walls we put 3or 4 Steel beams across from one side to the other and welded a steel plate on to the steel beam at the timber at the eaves. These are bolted down through the timber holding the walls from moving in or out. On the timbers coming down from the hip I welded an angle on in line with the vertical to hold the timber on top of the steel beam and is bolted to the angles. We had the sprayer there with a hose and water for fire prevention and soaked the wood down some where I was welding so the wood was wet before welding.
On dad's the back side of the mow wall was opened up so we can put round bales in up to the hip all across the barn will hold about 160-200 4x4 round bales when put in. We put them in 5 high where we clear the roof with them.

Not unusual for them to be converted to wedding venues. Had one here that was made into condominiums.

Maybe you know a guy I Worked with a few times many years ago

I wont mention his last name,,first name is Ted

He is off 519 past the Kingwood rescue squad,,,wont go into details,,but ,,you might know him?

Theres several around here that have been restored and are now used for wedding venues. Beautiful inside

Around here the restored (or new) venue barns rent for $6-10,000 for a wedding or big event.
