Late season hay

So the weather guesser says no rain till maybe Wednesday and even then iffy at best. So plan to cut hay today. Temps in the low 60s today but suppose to get warmer tomorrow and Monday so it should dry okay I hope. I have never done hay this late in the year but this year has been odd at best. I don't have room in the Hay barn for it so hope to sell it fast after I get it baled

old,

I cut some grass hay on Sunday. The grass was short and sparse. I tedded it on Monday and Tuesday. I raked and baled it on Wednesday. No rain on any of those days and the highs were in the mid 80s. Lots of dew during the nights.

I'm not at all happy with the bales. The grass feels greasy. I put the bales in my barn and laid them out so none was on top of any bale and there is at least 6 inches between the bales. They don't feel hot but I'm still not happy. I'm going to give them a few days and then break open a couple of them to look for mold/mildew.

Good luck with your bales.

It is also pretty windy here which should help dry it out. All I have is a sickle bar mower and rake and will do big rounds. If it doesn't get dry enough I'll just let it lay where it is

I know a man with 3 horses that would love to have good mold free grass hay. If it's free shipping I sure he would buy it.
40# bales are around $4. Much cheaper if it round bales.

Done here for the year for sure I think. Weather has been very wet lately and temps are cooling off for sure. Probably start chopping fresh to feed out daily to help cut down on the baled hay consumption. We can pretty much do that till the frost kills it off.

Ive had hay lay for a week this time of year and still not be even close to dry. Unless the night time lows are in the 60s with low humidity, I dont bother anymore. It usually ends up wasted.

$2 straw, $4 cow hay, Next to impossible to get horse grass hay.

Round bales are 3 to 4x cheaper per pound.

Good luck with the hay my friend. I finished mine the end of September, I think (can't remember for sure ) If it's not too heavy and you can turn it over a couple times, it should be ok. Keith

Baled 440 last Wed. in S W Pa. Mowed Mon morning, tedded Tue after lunch, raked and baled Wednesday after dew left. Hauled last load after dark. Days are short.

We went from to wet to to dry to to wet again this year. It rained the last few days and didn't rain today or last night and have a small chance of rain Wednesday. This is the first time in a month I have maybe 4 days with out rain.

Its a might late here as well
