Early rain, more trouble

Here on the west coast we are getting some early rain. By April we will have an extra heavy crop of weeds to be cut. For me that will mean more trouble. This year I used only only set of belts on my flail mower. Cutting heavy weeds the belts really work hard, get hot, start cracking and fail. Time to stock up on belts. I go to ebay, and get good belts fairy reasonable. My JD doesn't like the extra strain either, but seams to do ok. Is some of your work influenced by the weather? Stan

Cant you cut it high than come back in a few days and cut it all the way down? Or just dont let them get high in the first place.its been raining a lot here,Im gonna have to cut in a lower gear than usual myself because it was just too wet when it needed cutting

Sometimes I do cut high, then recut the same day. When I leave a job I don't want to return.

Most everything I do is affected by the weather! This year it was dry in the spring, so I could get into the woods and skid some firewood, we had a lot of blowdown last summer, 2020. Then it got too dry to mow, I was concerned about starting fires, we have a lot of rock, but after it rained I got everything mowed, and now it might be to wet in some places. We have some land that you can't drive on when it's wet, some summers not at all. Much of the logging in our area is done in the winter when the ground is frozen, but that season is getting shorter.

You were wise not to mow in the heat. I know all about starting fires from rock strikes. Last year I started one that almost got away from me. Stan

Have you tried Kevlar belts?

They hold up well on mowers, which are notoriously hard on belts.

This may be where you are already getting belts, I found them on Ebay, but they have much more than what's listed on Ebay. Good service and prices, no affiliation.

Not much rain here in Sierra Foothills. Only .12 not enough to start the grass yet. We could use a good rain right now. Cows need grass.
