What is this?

Looks old, but what I see of the engine looks like a modern vertical shaft.

Or am I just not seeing it right?

John Deere Model-101 Tractor. Built in the 1940s, was an experimental tractor. Designed as a Full Vision tractor, it offered unobstructed views of the ground, both in front of and directly to the rear of the operator. Originally the tractor featured a steering wheel, but, after field testing determined the wheel obstructed the view, it was replaced with handles. It's believed that only five tractors were produced. (This was copied from the 2013 John Deere Calendar, Rare Finds and Uncommon Ingenuity)

The latest Green Magazine has a picture of one of those. It says there are only two in existence and that the other one is owned by Deere and Co.

The Look of engine parts and the inside shape of the front rims reminds me of an older type tractor. Pre-1960 perhaps. Wingnut
