Sears Economy

The Sears Economy tractors came with an optional PTO. The model A engine gave out roughly 40 HP. How much PTO HP was delivered to the rear connection. Was there enough power to run a combine or a baler?

A tractor usually has more belt pulley/pto power than it does on the drive wheels. The reasoning is, it has to move itself in addition to pulling something else when it comes to pulling power. That said, if the engine has 40 horse for pulling power, the pto rating would be more. But if the pto power has a 40 horse rating the pulling power would be less. So depends on what function the 40 horse rating is for.
Either way, it would probly handle a small round or square baler. Alot of pull type combines had thier own engine mounted on the combine and just needed pulled around. It would be able to handle one of those. Not sure about a pto driven combine.

Because of the flywheel small square bales don't take that much power. 40 engine HP is plenty.
