My guess is that they converted over to electronic reading meters and these are the ones they removed. Our COOP made the transition several years ago. I don't know the lifetime of a meter but it probably was a good idea to replace the meters anyway as mine was 40+ years old.

I just looked online pricing for scrap yellow brass in Mich and it is at 1.60 a pound.

that's a lot work for little return

Road trip? Might be a long winter and it would give you something to do Tee.

Hey Mel--We could sit in front of your fireplace and strip them and tell tractor pull lies!!---Tee

Yep, life expectancy of old style brass meters was about 25-30 years. As the impeller & body wears due to use, the meters read slower. (Moving water does wear even polished brass.) Whenever we changed out really old meters, the home owner often claimed the new meter was inaccurate because they showed more monthly use than the old one did. Modern electronic meters are much more accurate than the old brass ones.
