I have a 1 1/4 acre fish pond that I stocked with copper nose bream .tractor supply is selling its catfish and pond fish feed for 18.50 per 40 pound sack.Im looking for a cheaper feed .seems every time I buy it goes up .75 to 1.00.someone suggested dog food? Anyone have a similar problem.i am in south Louisiana

If youre feeding them to grow, stick with fish food. If you just feed them on occasion for fun, small dog food will work but they wont eat it nearly as well. Tractor Supply ad shows a 40 lb bag of Sportsmans Choice fish food for $15.50. Though its more formulated for growing catfish.

That's a kind of bluegill, right? Carnivorous then I would think. You need to look into the nutritional requirements and feed them what they require. Otherwise you wasted your money stocking the pond. If there is more in there than the pond can sustain and you feed them poorly they will not grow properly.

I have a 50' x 100' Koi and Goldfish pond. I buy my fish food online from PetSmart, it's nutritional and the fish love it!

og food costs me about a buck a pound.

Go to the feed store and buy your floating catfish food. Bream love it as do the bass.........the bass????? We all know that predators are triggered into action when they aren't really out hunting food because they are hungry.

Toss a can full of feed out on the water and the perch will come and surface feed. Doesn't take long for big mouth to start cruising the area, milling around in the perch who pay them no attention because they are looking up at the next morsel to consume. As soon as the bass lines up an easy kill, a big swish of the tail, mouth open, down the hatch.....while the suvivors scoot for cover. Fun to watch.

I have piers on my pond and call the perch when its time to feed. I stomp my way out to the end and you can see the ripples in the water where the perch are making a B-line for the pier. Great Sport

I will always have this childhood memory:

Family stop at a state of Michigan fish hatchery in Allegan county.
Right next to a state hwy on a Sunday.
It was closed but not fenced back then so you could walk around the long and narrow open concrete rearing tanks of fish.
Each tank had a certain size of rainbow trout.
As mom walked around the tanks, the fish would go crazy trying to get as close to her as possible. The trout totally ignored the rest of us.

Come to find out it was because she was wearing the same color windbreaker as the workers uniforms.

Dad also told the story of "some kid" going there wearing baggy bib overalls. Sitting on the wall of the fish tanks with a hook and line running down the inside of the pant leg.............and walking out a little bit later.
