I took a drive over to Ridgeland, WI this morning to look at a set of tires. Had to go through Somerset so on my way back I stopped there. Between findagrave.com and google maps I was able to pinpoint the exact location of my great, great grandfather Francois' grave.
His original stone still stands but they have added a second monument to him that is easier to read.
Francois moved to Somerset while he was young and married. His wife gave him 12 children.
Then she died so he remarried and his second wife gave him 13 more children.
Yes. From one man came 25 children.
Sommerset was a big French Catholic community then. Still is in some ways.
And you know what they say about those Catholics - that wherever 4 Catholics are gathered you'll usually find a Fifth.
I figured he might be a bit thirsty so I brought a tiny bottle of brandy with me and took a sip myself. Then poured the rest in the grass for him to enjoy.
I hope you enjoyed the sip grandpa.
Your decensents are a huge multitude and we still think of you.

One of those guys who like to marry women who had poor hearing. Husband to wife: You wanna go to sleep, or what?
WHAT??

Take a look at this from the old stone. Born 3 years different than new stone.

Epitaph
Here Lies Francois Lemire born in St Francois, Canada on 3 April 1800 and buried in Somerset on 15 Sept 1877 age of 77 years 5 months and 12 days

New stone says born April 2,1803 in Baie du Febvre Canada,
Both died same date 1877.
I believe old stone is for Francois Xavier Lemire.
I got curious when I saw Lemire name as it is not real common around here and I know a few people with that name in their genealogy.

That's a neat story. My great-great grandfather is buried a few miles from where I live. He came from Switzerland and was naturalized in 1861 I believe. I have an old property tax map from about 1870 that showed his name on his land.

He had at least 300 grandchildren and at least 2400 great grandchildren in 1955.

Interesting! I had a G,G,Grandfather that was also French Canadian and had 3 wives and 20 some children, most of whom lived which was rare in the day.
