The seed arrived today . Its a new variant they call flex 719 and It can be drilled fall or spring it doesnt need the dormant period to grow .

Is this like spring wheat? That is what we grow for grain here in Australia. Winter wheats are also being grown in the higher colder country for grazing then they can be locked up for either hay or grain. Winter wheat is planted in late summer or early autumn, spring wheats are planted in autumn through to early winter. Have not grown triticale, it is grown here mainly for stock feed.
 
SV, never heard of triticale until reading one of your post a couple years ago, must be like the spelt we used to grow for feed. We used it like most farmers use oats. I always enjoy the scenery in your pics as well as your vintage tractors.
 
Grew a bunch of trit in variety tests for Clemson.
That stuff produces a lot of hay or high protein seed for feed.
Just keep the Tribbles out of it.

We always grew California red oat's for hay. There is no more available in CA, it all comes from Oregon and does not grow worth a crap because it is not aclimated.
Popular in the central valley is what they call forage mix which I believe is wheat, oats and barley.
I planted wheat for grain a few times and it did well.
 
This is a cross between wheat and rye . This variety you can drill spring or fall . On a good year it will make 3 ton the acre dry land
 
Depends on where Im at . Where this is going about 10 to 14
inches . Where I range my cows 18 to 22 inches .
 
Yes it will regrow if you can get a little rain I get one crop and usually some second crop off dryland
