Finally finished....

...with corn chopping. It's been an exasperating season. 200 acres never seemed like so much! The first 130 acres or so, we used our Dion, but after an issue with the kernel processor, we opted to bring our NH 240 out of the shed to keep moving while we awaited parts. With 9 rows left to go, the NH threw a knife, and the whole show ground to a halt.

Rather than spend the rest of the day fixing, I cut the last 9 rows with the old Fox we use to open fields. Thought you might enjoy the picture.

Looks good always nice to have a backup plan and a backup plan for the backup plan.LOL One spring we were chopping first crop hay and ran a hitch pin in a brand new set of knives in the 3940 tearing 2 or 3 knives off the drum. When changing hay heads in the dark the 15/16 wrench used to loosen the head drive chain fell into the pickup head and when I put the pto in gear it broke a roller on a tooth bar. Next morning changed to my vintage John Deere 12 chopper and after 2 loads a u joint failed. Neighbor came over with his Gehl 865 (that I like to make fun of) and finished for me. Tom

No better feeling than to finish before the weather turns. Also, good to have a back up machine or two. I had a cylinder on the 970 roller harrow go from a very minor leak to a serious one while getting wheat ground ready. The old 1000 field cultivator has been sitting around not used so I robbed a cylinder to keep going. As it turned there was a cylinder in an auction last Saturday that specs out the same so that is going on the 1000. Dad does not like old unused equipment around but you never know when you might need it or a key component from it. I wish I could have back ups for the major pieces such as the 6620 combine or 8430 tractor. Heck, if I could afford it I would have several planting tools all with different features. Would like to have a 1560 drill. Someday, I guess.

I had a similar accident with a 122 chuckwagon my first year farming. Down the hill it went and if it had only moved over 6 inches the cross conveyor would have missed the tree. I did end up with a decent 1065 wagon gear and lots of spare parts. Tom
