Noise coming from 70 john deere clutch area

Hey all, I noticed there was some information from Prior posts regarding engine knocking noise on John Deere 70 gas engine .....some great Insight on John Deere 70 gas engine clunking noise. I've got one too, I've checked just about everything mentioned. I have a question, does anyone know how much camshaft to crankshaft gear clearance is acceptable? When rocking the crankshaft back and forth, I can see movement and here clunking from the two gears clearance. Also, I haven't pulled flywheel, real unusual situation, it looks like someone removed the ring gear, cut a slice from the outer part of flywheel inward, roughly 4 inches, maybe a means to tighten up flywheel to crankshaft splines? Then reinstalled ring gear. The flywheel does not appear and sound like it's loose on the splines at least while I'm rocking it by hand... not sure if it is those two gears being a bit worn.
Any thoughts? Or clearance measurement?

so it is it clutch area or flywheel area? those tractors are famous for the clutch spines splines to wear out and that causes that knocking noise. your not going to get that kind of knocking from gear clearance. i bought a john deere A a long time ago and the clutch spines were completely worn out. that means a crankshaft replacement.

Unusual that they would cut the flywheel. Maybe they had trouble getting the ring gear back on when there went to change it? Should have just heated the gear up and they drop right on. Any pictures of what they did?

must be another one of these ask a question and dissappear. at least work with us on the problem . i like to see end results.
