JD 630 Generator Noise

When I shut off my 630, there is a loud squealing noise coming from either the generator or voltage regulator. What would this be and is it harmful to keep running the tractor? Thanks

If it does that with the engine shut off then check to see if it is motoring and the belt is slipping. If it is then the V.R. is sticking

There's a chance the Cutout Relay located in the Voltage Regulator has stuck closed contacts. They are supposed to OPEN when the tractor shuts down but if not, there's a high current battery discharge flowing through the VR's Cutout Relay. If that happens the ammeter would swing over to high discharge does it ??? If left uncorrected the battery will discharge rapidly and genny will get hot. If the belt were removed the genny would spin also.........If that happens disconnect a battery cable until the cause can be determined. Perhaps the belt is loose and the genny trying to turn it (because cutout stuck closed) makes the slipping belt squeal ???

YESSSSSSSSSSS its harmful

When Daddy's Moline did that, one of the ball bearings was going bad.

If its the voltage regulator sticking, it will soon let all the smoke out and probably burn the paint off the generator. At least mine did.

Does it squeal when the engine is costing to a stop or does it squeal after the engine has come to a halt. Our 51 A has a generator that squeals on shut down when the engine is just about to come to a halt and makes little squeaks when the engine is rocking to a stop. It has done this for a good long time and the bearings are good. Must be the brushes.

If your generator squeals after the engine has stopped turning then the voltage regulator is stuck on like the others mentioned. If the squealing stops when the engine stops turning you have something going on inside the generator, probably a bad bearing.
