Combine and Swath

I finished up combining canola a couple of days ago and have been swathing oats. Canola was as expected, poor yield. Too hot, dry, and hail in July. The first field of oats looks good from the swather seat. Second field is thin and short. Under seeded to a grass, alfalfa mix so it didn't get any herbicide and only a little granular fertilizer. I might just be the last guy combining here this year. Some video from the tractor cab showing the 7721 JD pull type at work. And in the swather cab cutting oats.

7721 Combining Canola

Looking at the three combines across the road, then you pulling your JD, I dont have to think very hard to determine which one of you has the best chance to make a profit.
We had several backwards years here in the past ten, where I would be out swathing grain in the end of September. Those look like beautiful swathes of Oats.

(quoted from post at 03:35:52 09/24/21) As long as you are done before the snow, you'll be fine.
I believe it was two years ago at this time we had snow. It really set harvest back and a lot of crop laid out all winter. You never know what to expect here. Best to be done early.

Just glancing at the ads I see those big newer JD machines are well over half a million dollars each. You have to be a good farmer with great crops to justify that cost. Its not unusual to see two, three, and more combines at work on one farm here.

You're not the only one still combining, Rusty. I'm going out this afternoon to pick up a half dozen wheat sloughs. I think I saw you mentioned earlier your JD has more capacity than your 1660 - is that correct? I thought they'd be about equal.

Hi Jim. Just about to try the oat swaths this afternoon. Hope the crazy wind does not blow all the straw away as I'm hoping to leave it in rows for baling. Yes, after running both machines I'd have to say the 7721 has a little more straight line capacity than the 1660 axial when it comes to putting a heavy swath through. The SP makes up for it in maneuverability on corners though.
It is common to plug the header auger/feeder house on the IH but I've only done it once on the JD pull type.

That's interesting you have problems with plugging the auger/feeder. I used to have trouble like that with my 1460 - it had the 810 header with small auger. My 2166 has the newer header with large auger and it rarely plugs up. On my 1460 when the header plugged too easily it was due to the feeder slip clutch wearing out. Once I replaced it the combine worked a lot better. I think I replaced that slip clutch twice over the years.
