Scrap Metal

I took a 7' front loader bucket of scrap metal into ALTER METAL yesterday. About 4 miles from my farm. Most of it was old farm machinery parts, cultivator shovels, etc. They called it 'unsorted steel'. $330 per ton. Had the check in my hand when I walked out the door.

I took in some #1 copper 3.45 a pound, I have been saving for along time so I had a good check!

I took a load to Alter Metal in North Platte, NE last week and it was only $110 a ton. Wow am I in the wrong place.

Junkshow hauled in some old cable, barbed wire, tin sheet drops and other junk. The small place borrows the feed mills scale around the corner for weigh in. Even at this remote yard they payed $310/ ton.

Yes, as the economy improves scrap prices always rise, last year I didn't sell my aluminum cans, they weren't worth anything, this spring, much better. I just checked, I used to buy 3/4 x 21 black pipe for under $10, now it's 40!

We have great freight train service. Alter has a siding or two coming right into their yard. Canadian National. 25 trains per day.
145-155 cars per train. 4 engines on all of them. There's also a big foundry right next to Alter. Some of it probably goes there.

Here at our scrap yard
its better to take in small stuff
if its to big yes the weight may be good
but they have to cut it up to the size they need.
so you get less.

I got 9 cents a pound earlier this summer at an Amish run yard. The bulk of it was structural iron but but I got mixed sheet metal price. Won't do that again.

Here where I live it's 71/2 for 4 ft and under, and 5 cents for mixed. I could probably get a better pice in San Diego, but would need to drive 70 miles. Stan

I'm looking at doing some scraping. A friend is a fabricator/welder. He bought new steel last spring for about $.60 a pound. Last week he paid $1.61 a pound. Obviously he has to calculate that into his bids.

I have a friend that has a place to stack and store scrap metal that can be used to make projects. I haul my good scrap to his place. When I need metal, I go shopping there, free.

Junk, rust, tin, water heaters, washer, dryers I'm happy to just get rid of it no matter what they are paying. It's would cost me to haul it the the landfill.
I wait until have a dump trailer full of rust. Recycle place is 10 miles away. A year ago they were paying $120 a ton. I was happy, more than paid for my gas and cleaned up my junk pile I hide behind a privacy fence.
