My JD 40 shifter will not go in any gear nor come out if gear. It currently is in gear but i do not know what gear it is in. I attempted to pull the top plate off but it will only lift about 3/4 and it hangs up and wont come off. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

I was on same position years ago but on a standard model M.

Getting the top cover up just a crack is plenty of room for thistle tube of PB blaster or your solvent can of choice.
And spray up to loosen rust on shift rails and spray down to loosen rust on shift collars.
Repeat process daily and she will start moving around.

Had the exact same thing happen to me this week on my 40C.I keep wiggling the cover back and forth up and down and right and left up and down. Took a break. Went back to it later and it finally came out. Put the transmission in neutral lined up the forks and put it back together.

You will have to disconnect the hydro lines, unbolt the hydro unit and move it back about an inch or so and then the cover lifts straight up. Then you can try to solve the problem. And NO there is no way to wiggle it up.

I'm pretty sure George has the right answer. The 40C probability does not have Touch-O-Matic, so no hydraulic lines passing by the transmission, and no hydraulic housing overhanging the shifter cover.
