Is it safe to sleeve?

I have a 4 cylinder Komatsu diesel engine, made by Yanmar. The engine model is s4d84e-5kfd. The cylinders don't have liners. 2 cylinders were scratched by the pistons. It needs to be machined for +.50 mm pistons and rings, but rings and pistons are only available in standard or +.25 mm. Most engines S4D84 model engines used liners. So, I can get rebuild kits with liners and use standard size pistons and rings. Is it safe to have the cylinders machine for liners?

I think you need to talk to a machine shop familiar with these specific engines and get their advice.

Native block wall thickness is the deciding factor. If the replacement sleeve is a dry sleeve, and thin, it might be possible.
Wall thickness and core alignment in the casting of the block drives that factor. If the replacement sleeve is a wet sleeve, I
don't think it will work. If a repair sleeve is installed that is not much larger than the existing bore, (maybe 3mm) then that
bored to OEM size, you would have a solid solution. Jim

Thin wall press in sleeves are available
for that type of repair. As for being an
option on that particular engine that
question is best answered by a reputable
shop that preforms the work. If you are
near NW Ohio I highly recommend Harts in
Cecil Ohio.
