$16 for a bale of straw

I Thought of SV making more money with straw.

The smaller the bale the more costly.
And these are wire bales.

The straw is still only $6.00. The rest of the price came from all the work put into the graphic design of the label and the flammability testing and the product liability work of the legal department. There's probably only like a dollar's worth of profit.

I should go into business.
Neighbor sold me a 40# bale for $2.
Can't understand the profit in $16 straw.

Urban areas where people don't know a farmer or would have to travel miles to find a bale and deal with farmer that had rather shoot their mouth off about how they hate city people and how they are going broke than make money, just easier to pay the $16.

Similarly there are those little plastic wrapped bundles of firewood for $5.00 at groceries and gas stations. Another reason to be thankful being a country guy/gal.

Nothing wrong with that. Just think about it a minute. Folks buying that would have no use for a big bale of straw. Most would have no way of hauling it and no where to put it if they did. All they want or need is a grocery poke full.

Now what do you think is going to happen if the buyers do happen to know a farmer with straw for sale. The farmer would probably give someone a poke full if he had a busted bail but he isn't going to waste his time dealing with people for a poke of straw. Not gonna happen.

I've seen them even smaller. Like, in inches. Like 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 by 3. People use them for indoor table top fall and thanksgiving decor, with thier miniature pumpkins and gourds and indian corn.
And just think, I've got regular size bales, and have a hard time getting $4.00 a bale out of them.
People will pay for convenience, and things that are cute.

There isn't as much as you think. How many middle men get their hands on that straw and have to make a piece before it even gets to the store? Then the store is lucky to sell HALF of what they bought before the holidays, then they end up selling the rest at 50% off.

Why do they bother? Everything is to get you into the store to buy other things. It's all intertwined. Some things break even, others make a little, a few make a lot. The hope is you buy enough stuff from each category that they make money on some of it.

Its made in Mexico wonder if its non gmo ? I hear Mexicans and the Chinese thrive on gmo corn and overpriced straw

I bought a bale of oat straw at a local nursery about six years ago for around $14. They also get around $8 for loose bales of dirty pine straw(lots of twigs and pine cone pieces.)
