Today in 1944.
Below is a brief but rather heartrending account of the US Marines taking the Island of Peleliu. If you've never read 'With the Old Breed' by Eugene Sledge it is worth your time to do so. He fought at Peleliu and then at Iwo Jima. What those boys went through was truly beyond description.

Great story! My grandpa was in the Philippines for most of the war. Dad said he never would talk of what he seen or did over there. He made it home right at Christmas 1945. Dad turned 75 todau...

My uncle John was right there with them & Chesty Puller and survived.
Wore shrapnel the rest of his life from Iwo.

Kinda explains the pictures I saw from the islands years ago. At the time I thought this was humanity at it's worst. Now I can understand how humanity was lost.

I just read the story you posted. It is a good one. Dad had a cousin who was a Marine killed on Tarawa.

There is a fellow on YouTube who combined video clips from The Pacific TV series with narration from the book With the Old Breed.

I always thought this was a powerful scene when Eugene comes home to the U.S.
