Black and Decker purchase

Interesting that yesterday Stanley Black and Decker announced the all cash purchase of Hustler and Big Dog mowers by purchasing Excel Corp of Hesston KS for $375 million. I sure hope the plant stays in Hesston - that would be a lot of jobs to dump.

So now Hustler and Big Dog join Cub Cadet, Craftsman, MTD, Troy-Bilt and Rover as B&D turf products. Looks like they will have a giant share of the zero turn market. I doubt Deere is too worried, but still interesting to me how manufacturing is coalescing.

I have a Cub Cadet zero turn mower. It's okay, but nothing to shout about. I rebuilt the deck back in April. My local Cadet dealer had some of the parts that I wanted but had to order most of them from Cub. They dribbled in and I installed them, except, there's a flat part that bolts to the very bottom of the front of the deck. They call it an apron. According to the dealer, the part is back ordered from Cub. I plan to go back to the dealer this week and cancel the order and request a refund of the money that I paid for the apron back in April. It'll be interesting to see how they handle my request.

Deer is not as big a player in the zero turn market as Ex-Mark and Kubota , most of that CubCadet
stuff is made in Brownsville or Martin Tennessee. Maybe you will keep your plant but I would not
bet on it.

I might add that years ago the John Deere dealer in Muncie Indiana was also the Hustler dealer and the 3rd largest Hustler dealer in the state. John Deere told them to drop Hustler or they were going to lose the JD franchise!!

I have about 120 hours on a 2020 Big Dog Alpha 1 mower. It does everything I've asked it to do and we are not gentle with it. Kawasaki motor. I haven't needed parts or service, I do my own oil changes so I can't comment on that but my dealer has always taken good care of me on other equipment. I expect it to outlive my mowing needs.

Steve ..... I have a Hustler magazine that I haven't looked at for a while. Thanks for reminding me. I think Larry Flint just died a while back did he not?

I have a Bad Boy Maverick 60 w/Kaw. engine, 3yrs old, no issues at all other than the fuel gauge quit working.

(quoted from post at 14:01:37 09/14/21) I have a Hustler mower that I love. Hope this don't screw up the parts availability down the road!
It probably will. B&D also owns DeWalt now.
My local service center no longer does DeWalt warranty work.
They claim they didn't get paid for it. I have no way to verify.
B&D's answer for me was to send me parts and to replace them myself.
They sent me a complete pump and a new electric motor.
That's ok, but the air compressor I was trying to fix weighs 650 lbs.
Hard to move around by yourself and the parts took weeks to get here.

A couple of fine companies now owned by China.

China bought Stanley tools a good while back.

Wrong. SWK (Stanley Black and Decker) is a publicly traded company. Chinese government may own a lot of stock (I do not know one way or the other) but it is not exactly "owned" by any one entity. It is a public stock. It is down right now - you can buy some!

We did a job at the Minnesota National Guard Armory in St
Peter Mn. That project gave credits for domestic
manufacturers. The NGA uses Best Hardware across the
board at their many armories. Best is owned by Stanley.
When I had a problem with a lockset I contacted the door
supplier. They call Indianapolis where Best is headquartered.
Best calls China. China sends the parts to Mexico to
assemble. Mexico sends the finished product to Indianapolis
who sends it to the supplier who in turn delivers it to St Peter
and this is domestic. Dont hold your breath on staying in
Kansas.

Hopefully the plant will stay there.
Stanley has been in the process of
moving back from China for several
years. They built a new plant just
outside Charlotte a few years ago.

I hear you on all the way. I work for these folks now so I cannot say too much one way or the other. It will be
interesting to see how the management does with MTD being no more.
