Strange hydraulic problem?

Got my Gleaner K2 out to do 10 acres of oats. Haven't had it out in a year but it started up and everything was working fine. Header & reel lifted & lowered smoothly with no hesitation or anything. I was greasing everything & doing maintenance and noticed the hydraulic oil was very low, not even showing in the sight glass with the header down. So I filled it up to the full mark & it took most of a gallon. Worked fine a few more times and then suddenly the header & reel would not lift except in very short bursts. Went back & checked the fluid level and the tank had overflowed a lot. Not sure what has happened. The header will lift all the way up eventually but only in very short bursts when you first move the lever then it stops until you release & start again. Ive done this several times thinking maybe air in the system or something but it hasn't improved. I know it has an accumulator in the system but never understood what it did or what it is for. Anyone have any insight as to what might be going on?

Most likely thing is that your oil that came oput of the tank vent got on the pump drive belt and it
is slipping , check the belt if not that your high side relief valve is opening but I am betting
slipping belt, get someone to stand back there and watch when you try to pick up

The only thing I can offer is that a couple of times, I have seen a machine which needed an improved breather to keep oil from
frothing and blowing up and out. One was a Gleaner EIII, [predecessor to the K] and one was an IH 3444 TLB. What I mean by improved
is enlarged and lengthened.

An accumulator is typically employed to help a header float when trying to operate on the ground. I doubt that is causing your
issue. My K2 didn't have an accumulator. My F2 had automatic header height control, but no accumulator. The float assist was a
large, adjustable spring on each header lift cylinder.

That's a good thought and makes sense now that you mention it. I will check that tonight. It would account for how its behaving. Still wonder where all the oil was hiding that disappeared and then reappeared. Pretty sure your supposed to check it with the header down not up.

i dont know how the pump is driven on these ,.. but if it is belt driven the belt must be tight or it will hesitate and jump just as u say.
plus oil level must be checked with cyl's retracted , not extended. other wise u shoot oil everywhere once it is returning to tank. the
accumulater is like a cushion and helps in the lifting.

Header down would be retracted and that's what I had. I don't think I had the reel down though now that I think about it so maybe that contributed to it.
I went home at lunch and quickly looked at it. The pump is close by and belt driven and looks like oil may have gotten on it. I will try cleaning it up tonight and maybe put some belt dressing on it. Looking at it makes me think I replaced that belt a couple years ago as the belt looked fairly new.

the belt has to be TIGHT or else it will slip. my massey 850 combine does the same thing once the belt gets loose.
