Truck drivers

Every aspect of daily life is made possible because a truck driver delivered the goods and resources needed.

So every year in September companies have a drivers appreciation week to recognize the hard work they do.

And every year us drivers pass this picture around amongst ourselves.

I informed the boss last Friday I expected at least one plate of BBQ leftovers or my truck was going to start using a lot of oil. 19 years and I finally got a meal from them.

Truck drivers are just people, getting paid to do a job. Some are great and very professional.
Others are stupid jerks, playing with their phone, likely to cause a serious accident.
Just like every other job. If you are good, and reliable and careful, I respect you.
If you are an inconsiderate jerk..I don't.

gov't wants to allow 18 y.o. to drive interstate

More like companies want to allow 18yo to drive interstate to curb the driver shortage and rising wages as they fight over the available drives.
And the government is thinking of allowing it to calm their lobbyist.

During the oil boom down here, a lot of very young folks were now driving trucks... and on the clover-leafs, there was an overturned truck about every other week. Would seem you cant do 50mph in a 25mph on the clover... go figure... Sure got old having to detour going to town for a couple of years.

So how old do you have to be? I hauled corn up I65 when I 19. Is that a rule for cdl holders only?

i would rather not see an 18 year old driving truck. sure some may handle it, but most are too immature to be in that big a piece of machinery. also, i am curious what their fleet insurance will cost. when i had the tow trucks at my body shop, the insurance would not accept any driver under 25.

That's not necessarily an age thing. Daily I see drivers that don't have a clue where their rear tires are on their trailers, over the center line on curves, over curbs on corners, running through red lights that they more than enough time to stop for. There are a lot of guys (and gals) driving trucks, some of them are actually truck drivers.

Why ???? i was 17 when i started on a B61 Mack with five and four , NO P/S , NO AIR RIDE SEAT , NO A/C No air RIDE and dragging a lowboy with up to the New D 9 G as the biggest down to maybe a D 4 the smallest . I would side load myself and unload . Longest run was on the big move to the new job site about 294 miles away that took just about 12 hours to make loaded . over the old roads . I made about a dozen runs on that move . even hauled the vary first T D 30 I H dozer sold to a strip mining operation out of the dealer ship to the mine OUT of state i W Va. that was a hoot No interstate travel on that one , oh wait we were just starting building the interstate system . The T D 30 was about 6 ton heavier then a D 9 G and it went fully dressed Blade and ripper and cab. Them hills i W.Va. brought the old Mack down to only three gears left on the hills.

(quoted from post at 17:37:44 09/13/21) A mistake, there to immature, they don't know what all can happen !!

Because 21 year olds are sooooooo mature... 21 year olds are just getting started sewing their wild oats. Sure there are a few with their heads screwed on straight but most are still just silly kids, only legally able to consume alcohol.

I agree with restrictions on young drivers. While there are no doubt tens of thousands of very mature 18 year olds that would have no problem, the actuarial records that the insurance companies use will show you WITHOUT A DOUBT that younger drivers are a significantly higher risk. Maybe you or a close relative or friend is sharing the road with them. If you know a better way to predict if someone will be a bad risk that will hold accurate for hundreds of thousands, don't keep it a secret!

Tractor Vet we still have a lot of those roads in WV. I have never seen a TD 30, but I have run a TD 25 on with a coal blade on a coal pile. A 25 would be a heck of a load for any B model. I can only imagine a 30. Friend of mine still hauls heavy equipment in the coal fields. He hauled a blocked up 992 CAT with the bucket on it over a 1 lane bridge the other day. He had pictures. Pretty scary site.

BINGO!!! My info is a bit dated since I retired 12 years ago, but 95% + of the rules changes in the FMCSR were at the suggestion of the trucking industry, not gov't. This sounds entirely legitimate.

But it is okay for an18 year old to go to war???

Yes, muleboss. They are kept under very tight close supervision. They can't go out on independent assignments until they have years of experience.
