Posted yesterday about a failed pto yoke on our New Holland 479 haybine. Went to local CNH dealer this morning. Cost of new yoke and u joint was 329.75 . That is without tax. We are set up there as farm tax exempt. Messicks had the items slightly cheaper, but with a longer lead time. Its one of those have to have situations. I checked a few other local places with no luck. Will have parts Wednesday morning.

Is it a "special" yoke made for this exact application?

If NOT there's all sorts of places to get generic PTO driveline parts.

Got a photo or even a part number?

Here's a link to a helpful catalog, they don't sell direct, but if you find something you can GOOGLE the part number for the best price.

Welcome to fiat . I joint alone for my baler was 175$ plus freight that took a week . Brass grease fittings 75$ plus freight took two weeks

Rural King and TSC sells some PTO shafts. A friend need a PTO shaft for his brush hog. Found on online for under $150 shipping included.

Yeah I kinda thought that would be an option. Looking online
and trying to match it up. Time now is more of a concern than
anything. I probably can find it cheaper, but I will have part in
hand Wednesday morning. If we were done and it was a
repair for next year I would definetly try that route. Thank you
!

I did go to our local tractor supply but had no luck with what they had in stock. Kind of a need now item.

I do remember earlier in the year when I was having issues with other u joints on this haybine you posted that pic and the cost. A little ridiculous to say the least !

I ran into something like that on my NH460. A spline U-joint y0ke broke and NH wanted an arm and leg for it. I cut the spline part of it off and welded it to a new U-joint yoke I got form Orscheln's farm and home and that was over a decade ago. It is still good but other things broke on it so I parked the NH460

I had a new Holland baler that had some odd sized square pto shaft. I couldn't find one anywhere. Cant remember how that ended now but I still have one of the yokes I think.

Need it now means pay pay now.
There's an old transmission shop in town that repairs drive shafts.
I would take to them and see if they could fix it now.
We have a big truck place the can repair drive shafts too.
Sometimes living close to a larger town has it benefits.

When I was at TSC yesterday I noticed that the PTO parts section had been greatly downsized. A couple of years ago I was standing around at an auction while an IH 55 forage harvester was selling. Final bid was 165 dollars with 2 heads but there had to be close to a 1,000 dollars worth of PTO parts, hydraulic hoses, hydraulic cylinder, tires, etc. if you planned to never run that chopper again. Back to TSC I would imagine to justify space a part has to turn every couple of weeks. Some baler from the 1960's or 1970's probably won't help that turn. I could make you sick by mentioning that one place I get used parts from had the owner busy with the excavator outfitted with the pincher reducing a NH 268 to dumpster scrap metal when I was there yesterday. He did not have the hydraulic cylinder I was looking for.

479 is an ancient machine. The fact that you can get parts AT ALL, at any price, and they're only a couple of days away, is really a miracle.

There has to be a motive for manufacturers to keep parts like this in stock. Money is a real good motivator.

Honesty thats cheaper than I expected. Wait til the gear box needs rebuilt. You either scrap it or find a donor machine. $1600 for the two gears last time I checked.

NH had the sneaky way of using bearings and pto parts built to speck, just for them, and not interchangeable with other parts available for wider applications. So they got ya , any time you need a repair part. I would go out on the hunt for another parts machine if you want to keep using your 478. Rule is if you want to run old equipment, get two of everything, so when one breaks down, you either use or cannibalize the other. My first NH haybind was a 461. If you think its hard to find a parts 479, have you ever seen a 461 ? I sold mine to a guy hunting for parts, he was excited to get it, lol

I never had a problem finding bearings for my old 488. They were all just standard sized bearings.

It pays to buy up parts like that at auctions or junk yards. I busted the yoke for my Hesston 1120, couldn't duplicate it locally, but the yoke off a rusted out NH 329 spreader works good enough to get me through.

FWIW- Tractor Supply really should change it's name to something more accurate.....

Oz,
If you look at this thread via classic view, you will see my reply was to SVCummins.
And if you look at the link name (a part number) you will see that part number is the CNH spider SVCummins
posted.
